Hey guys...

I just wanna ask what is the requirements for civil marriage?

Do i need to have an SS# before we can apply for marriage license?

Im just wondering if my passport and cenomar is all they need to apply for marriage license... Thanks

When we tried to go and obtain a marriage licence with just his passport they didnt allow us, we had to apply for his SS firt and when it arrived we then were able to obtain the mariage license. So, check the requierments with your local vital records office.

We got our license and got married first, and then her SSN after. We are in Virginia, so the requirements of other states may differ.

You can check out the guide here: http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn for steps to get it though. Looks like you just need to wait for a couple of weeks after entering the U.S. to get it. It's probably a good idea to get as soon as you can anyway.

Most county offices do not require the (foreign) party to have an SSN when requesting a marriage license, just a passport for ID and age verification.

Some want to make sure you're not married currently, so, yes, if you have it/them, bring any cenomar and/or divorce decree, just in case they ask. If you don't have them (handy), well, just hope they don't want to see one...

Gemini,

Marriage and marriage rules are controlled by the state where you are getting married (not the state where you live). Go online and search for marriage requirements for the state/county in which you want to be married. I was married in New York State/Columbia County. No SSN required, but you must have applied for the license 24 hours BEFORE your ceremony.

In some states, there is a 3-day waiting period. So it really depends where you are getting married.

Thank you for your response Sukie... I have checked california... They werent asking for SSN only passport or any state i.d issued just to determine the age.. So i guess ssn can apply after the marriage...

Depends on the state, look up requirements for your state. Many states are fine with just your passport and BC and do not require an SSN. And no one will want your CENOMAR.
