Can't renew driver's license-US citizenship proof gone for passport application

Hello forum folks,

So I ran into a sticky situation. I sent off my Naturalization Certificate to get my US passport. As you know, they require the original copy to be sent. Now it turns out I need my Naturalization Certificate to renew my driver's license . My license is expiring after next week and they require original copies for proof of citizenship which I do not have as of the moment. I just sent my certificate this weekend. I'm running the risk of being with no license for over a month, which is not an option for me since I need my car for work.

Any ideas on how to get the naturalization certificate back? or expedite the passport process? Right now it's in the regular process option.

Please help!! I'm super desperate!!

why do you need naturalization cert to renew DL? I never heard of it.

My license has a Temporary Immigration Status notation. They noticed this at the DMV and they require proof of my legal presence in the US. Which I don't have right now as I mentioned in the very first post of this thread.

Any ideas anyone??

Some states require a permanent resident to show their green card to renew. Since the OP doesn't have that any more, the DMV is likely looking for proof of their citizenship since they are indicating they are a citizen. They don't have that either since it was sent off with the passport application.

Sorry, i can't help out. I don't know the best solution except perhaps contacting your state representative or congress person.

I was told by the post office clerk to contact the National Passport Processing Center and see if I can get it back since they just sent it over today. If they can't then ask them to expedite my application. Is it possible to expedite a passport application after you have already sent it?

Any suggestions are welcome!!

Anyone have experience or heard of anyone expediting passport applications after sending them for a first time ever passport? I just want to confirm if this is currently possible.

I think you're kinda screwed. You will just have to wait for your naturalisation certificate to be returned, and won't be able to drive legally until that happens.

Any other ideas besides trying to get it back from the PO Box it was sent to or expediting the application (is this even possible?)

I'm willing to do whatever at this point haha

I am going to assume that you have a birthday coming up as most states tie the DL to your birthday. You might see if you could get the DMV to issue you an extension on the expiring DL based on the fact that you no longer have a GC and your Naturalization Certificate is with the Department of State to issue you a US passport. Do you have anything to show that you were Naturalized--NOA2? Did you make a copy of the Naturalization Certificate?

I seem to remember that my passport application took about 3 weeks, so you might be without a DL for a couple of weeks.

I would try to call the USCIS on Monday or do an infopass, explain your situation and see if they can give you an official document stating you are a citizen now. I really don't know what else you could do.

Hmm, I will look into getting a license extension. Thanks for the idea Dave&Roza. I do have a copy of the Naturalization Certificate and of the notice saying I passed my citizenship test.

Does USCIS actually give official notices that you are a citizen when you have neither the certificate or passport in your hands?

Also you could have requested expedited delivery at the time of the request.

I am a naturalized citizen applying for a US passport for the first time.

I didn't request to expedite it when I sent the application because I didn't need it in a hurry. Now this came up so now I do need it asap. I tried to get it back from the Post Office a couple of hours later but they didn't have it anymore.

I'm in NJ.

My license expires in a little over a week.

I got my citizenship this June, as I said before, I applied to get a brand new passport.

You must send over your original Naturalization Certificate when you are applying for the first time.
