An IR-5 is an immigrant visa, meaning the bearer is automatically granted a green card immediately upon entry; you don't need to apply for it. Provided the $165 immigrant visa fee has been paid then the green card will show up in the mail, usually within 30 - 60 days of PoE.

Immigrant visas are usually valid for six months from either the date of approval or the date of the medical, whichever happened first (for 99% of people it's the medical).

visa duration dates are printed in the visa, attached in the passport. this duration is the span of time one has to make the first entry into the USA. In general terms, it's usually 6 months from medical exam date. however -

once in the USA, on IR-5, a new period of authorized stay commences - please study the visa again, there is a sentence containing the word 'endorsement' in it - you should pay attention to that for the nonce, understanding what an I-551 document is, and why your parent now has an I-551 document with a 1 year duration, already inside the passport.

or not. your choice. Folk sometimes get confused about it, thinking dates in visa govern authorized stay duration in USA. That's not the case, at all.

that person's parent has 2 months duration in visa, most likely, because of medical issues with the medical exam. I've no interest to look him/her up and try to do research about his parent's visa stuff, at all. To simply say 'my parent had 2 months in visa' and nothing more, IMO is not useful to this discussion without the rest of the backstory for the 'WHY' on this 2 months duration.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
