When i filled n-400 application, I said 'N/A'. i believe i did the same when i completed my Biographic information for Green Card.

Now, when i am going through the documents.. i find different names(spelled differently and were shortened due to length) in my degree certificates.

But, the names in GC, Passport, Date of birth, Marriage certificate matches.

I never intent to use those names..even in my credit card, due to name length..it's different from my passport name.

I am confused what to say in the interview. Can i say "No" when IO asked me about other names used.

Please suggest.

Out of interest are we talking about shortened versions of the same name, such as Alex and Alexander, or something completely different?

for Instance..my name is JOHNSON Smith.. they just mentioned J Smith.

These are related to college/school certificates..

I am really confused.. Don't know what to say to IO.

As mentioned - names on Green card, marriage, Passport and Birth certificate matches and are correct.

It's the certificates(School and college) which i got in India were shortened.

Due to the length of my name, they had to shorten the name on credit/debit cards also

Oh this is absolutely no problem at all. You are over thinking.

This is for people who actually use a different name than what is their legal name.mdoe example, I have noticed many Asian students in the US from China etc just pick up some western name and use it all the time because Americans have difficulty pronouncing their ethnic name. It's not on their documents, but everyone in the department, in the university and at the job knows that person by his/her western name, such as Vincent or Edward or something like that, but that name does not appear anywhere at all on their documents. In such case, if a lot of people do know you by a completely different name, it is necessary to indicate that in the form.

Another situation is when a woman changes her last name after marriage and takes her husband's last name, it is necessary to mention it. or in case of people in the entertainment business, some people have stage names and then less glamorous real names, in that case it is also necessary to disclose it.

In your case, no need.

Thanks for the feedback. In my case, name appears on tenth, inter and my college certificate in shortened form.

Do i need to mention in this case?

If i say "Yes" and write names..will they ask for the proof that it's my certificates?..

If i say "No"..will they think i am lying.

These are genuine certificates..Due to name being long, they keep shortening my name. The same thing happened with my credit and debit cards.

You will find out that interviewing officers are much more understanding than you think. If there is any discrepancy, which I don't think this one is, they will just ask you and you explain to the best of your ability and that's that. Done.

Also, don't forget that when you fill out any legal form, you are stating the truth based on what you think is the truth, that's why it's called " to the best of your ability." If the IO notices any mistake, he/she will just ask you to clarify and move on.

No, you are not lying when you say your name is JF Kennedy when your complete name is John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

When you filled out the form, you stated the truth based on what you believed is right at that moment, and it not wrong. Move on dude, this is a non issue.
