New Canadian coin pays tribute to Prince George's birthday

A friend sent me this article from the UK - I hadn't heard about it before but thought it was really neat. What a great looking coin!

The Royal Canadian Mint have produced two new coins featuring a portrait of the Royal Family, to celebrate the birthday of Prince George.

Marc Brulé, Interim President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint, said: “The Mint continues to celebrate special events in the life of Canada’s Royal Family, and we have proudly handcrafted new coins with a unique portrait featuring four generations which will be a beautiful addition for any royal collection.”

The coins feature the historically significant image taken at Prince George’s christening last October, of four generations of the Monarch and her heirs present together. Such an event has not occurred since the birth of the future King Edward VIII in 1894, which saw Queen Victoria, the Prince of Wales (future King Edward VII) and the Duke of York (future King George V) all present at the same time.

The coins depict Her Majesty seated on a chair, with the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge standing behind her, William holding young Prince George in his arms. The coins were designed by Cathy Bursey Sabourin. The other side bear an image of The Queen, which has been on all Canadian coins since 2003

The larger, silver coins are available for 20 dollars and the smaller coins, made from pure gold, are available for 200 dollars. Only a limited number of both have been minted, with 10,000 and 350 pieces available of the silver and gold coins respectively.

All coins come with a Royal Canadian Mint branded maroon box and a certificate of authenticity. They can be purchased on the website of the Canadian Mint.
