Canadians deliver water to protest Detroit shutoffs

The only thing it's highlighted for me is that there's a bunch of people that don't want to pay their water bill, and a bunch of do gooder Canadians have nothing better to do with their time. Trust me, no one in Detroit is going without clean drinking water despite what these Canadians with an obvious agenda might think.

And as far as going online and paying someone's water bill, that only exacerbates the issue, because when the bill comes due next month, they wont pay it because they know someone else online will pay it for them.

What is the 'obvious agenda of the do goody Canadians' beyond the one where they are highlighting the plight of those living in Detroit who have had their running water cut off. Are you perhaps suggesting that that's a lie, that no one has in fact had their water turned off?

Do you think that if they trotted down to the nearest Church ,Synagogue,Mosque or even laundromat for the atheist they would be able to get drinking water. to fill a gallon jug or two?

You should read the article before commenting.

Maude Barlow, a leading water rights advocate in Canada, and other activists brought 750 gallons of water in a seven-vehicle convoy that traveled through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel to deliver the water and the message that the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department's policy of shutting off service to delinquent customers violates the United Nations' 2010 declaration that water is a human right.

"What that means is that every country in the world is responsible for looking after their most vulnerable people," said Barlow, national chairwoman of the Council of Canadians, a social advocacy group. "It means that every country in the world is not allowed to turn the tap off of water that is already being delivered, and it means that nobody has the right to say no to water for people who cannot afford it."

I don't recall saying that no one has had their water turned off, but I may have. Please point it out for me. I can't remember what I had for lunch today, so anything is possible.

'Trotted'? I am sure that the local church groups will help where hey can. What's your point? Clearly you don't believe that easy access to running water is a right, or even a good way to ensure public health. You have a right to that opinion.

The uber libs want others to pay for the water coming out of the tap. Its so horrible to shut the water off to those that can't/don't pay the bill.

Who's Karen?

Giving people free stuff isn't helping them, it's hurting them. It's teaching them that there is no personal responsibility. Wasn't it Jesus that said "Build a man a fire and keep him warm for a day, but set a man on fire and keep him warm the rest of his life"

I think there should be a limit on the number of  you can post in a day. Maybe in one post. I think I'll bring that up at the next VJ shareholder's meeting.

I am not advocating for "free stuff." I love how people continue to throw these words around loosely.

I would like to see an alternative solution until people are able to pay their bills.

Uber libs? There is nothing extreme about wanting everyone to have access to water coming out of a tap and water flushing their toilets. I don't want to get involved in a cholera epidemic, do you?

I think it's been pointed out multiple times in this thread that there are programs to assist people with paying their water bills.

Detroit will work out a payment plan. They have made that very public. All they have to do is contact them . This is about people so use to not paying, they are mad they know have to.

The rate of Cholera in Thailand for the last 10 years has been 1 case per 100,000 people. Hardly an epidemic.

isn't that free stuff?

Of course it is. I'm not opposed the people getting temporary govt. assistance. The problem I have with it is when it becomes a way of life.

I read the article, it clearly states that their agenda is ensuring everyone has access to fresh, clean running water in their homes, homes that are designed only to be lived in safely and hygenically if running water is in fact allowed to run freely through the taps. It's a nicety to suggest that somehow people who no longer have running water in their homes are not being denied a fundamental right. I am not quite sure how anyone has the right to the pursuit of happiness if their latrines are backed up, they can't have a wash and they have to buy bottled water to drink. Perhaps you can explain that more clearly for me? I also don't quite see how you can ignore the public health issue that arises from such a situation, not only for those who have had their water supplies cut off, but for the entire neighbourhood. Does that not strike you as at the very least short sighted?
