Why not? I have drank from lakes and streams for years, without filtration, and the only thing really wrong with me is that I keep coming back to this forum again and again.

And if you want to it is your choice. I have taken a bath outside in Sri Lanka. Drinking the water, such a different story.

And no, sorry, I would not suggest to a person for them to take their children to drink from a stream the bears and deers are pissing in.

Historically, towns had communal wells, pumps, or fountains for people to get their water. These things have been entirely replaced by piping water in to individual homes. You can't eliminate this water without replacing it with something else. Someone mentioned that water is available. Where?

And making people drive miles and miles to a lake is not a solution.

I live obviously in the third world.

I have a well, but not everybody does, the other option is hauling water in yourself, you see people with those plastic tanks, or having it delivered by tanker.

Where I am is semi arid so rain water harvesting is not that practical, may well be different on Detroit.

My point is, they should not get it for free. However, there should be an alternative for them to receive water until they are able to afford their bills, whether they pay 20 dollars to the YMCA or a local Community Center.

I agree. This is a problem that should be addressed in this type of situation. Free showers at a local facility for those affected and free gallons of water available at a local distribution hub. Turning on someone's water service to their house for free seems a little overkill. That's having your cake and eating it too IMO.
