Hi all,

I am applying for citizenship under 3 year rule. In the form it asks me to fill out all the trips outside of usa I have taken for the past 5 years, but I was not in the USA 4 years ago. Do I still have to write where I went in the past 5 years, or only 3 years? Thank you

You have to disclose any trips since you became a LPR, which means your have to put on the form all trips since the Resident since date on your GC.

The form is designed for both people applying under the 5 year and the 3 year rule. What they want to know is how many trips outside the country you have taken since becoming a Permanent Resident. The question is just not phrased very well.

This explained well. That's why I was confused. Thank you

So is it designed for people filing under 5 years when first eligible. I filed under the 5 year rule but have been an LPR since 2001. I already filed but only indicated the last five years of international travel dates. Should I put together a complete list since becoming an LPR to take with me to my interview?

While it's understandable why the officer may want to know about all your travel since you became an LPR, the form does just ask for travel in the last 5 years, so that's what I would put down.

Can earlier travel affect your permanent residency? Yes. For example, in your case, if you got your green card in 2001, then left the US from 2002-2005, then the interviewer may decide that you had abandoned your green card.

However, as I said, that's not what the form is asking for, so I would just list travel in the last 5 years. You could take a list of your other trips back to 2001 with you to the interview if you what, but I don't think you need to list those trips on the application form and I don't think you'll be asked for it unless USCIS records show that you had any extra long trips abroad.

Thank you. I did just list trips in the past five years on my N400 when I filed. I had more trips than would fit on the form, so I also had an attachment. All leisure travel of between 4 and 15 days a couple times a year the past five years.

I have attempted to put together a list of all my trips abroad since becoming an LPR and can get back to 2004, but before that I really have no idea. I have kept every hotel booking e-mail since about 2004 when we had a computer crash and lost just about everything. We didn't turn to digital photography until about 2005, so using photos isn't a good guide either. Any trip before 2004 however would only be for a few days traveling back to Canada to visit family or for the holidays. So no passport stamps to go from either.

We didn't really start to travel internationally for vacation until 2009. So most of my trips in the last five years look more exotic than those before 2004. But I don't think any would be considered abandoning LPR since they were simply vacation and once for work travel.

I will take the extra list of what I could determine to the interview and provide it if asked about it.
