Hi,

I don't know if this is the right place to post my question, but see if anyone can answer my questions.

I went through the CR-1 process and I have been in US for 7 weeks. However, I haven't received my green card yet.

How long does it take to receive the green card? What should I do?

Will I receive an authorization to work, or just the green card allows me to work?

Thank you very much!

Took mine almost three months, but 4-6 weeks is more normal. Have you checked they have the right address for you?

Hi,

You don't have to wait for the actual GC to arrive in the mail before you can do anything you need to as an LPR. They should have either stamped your passport with a temporary I 1551 form or stamped your visa. Either one serves as a temporary green card for one year until you get the actual card. Feel free to get your SSN card, begin working, open a bank account, petition an eligible family member, etc. The actual card can take usually about a month to arrive, but I've seen it take up to 3 months. Of course in your case I would check with USCIS customer service or your elis account should have your case number, I believe so you can track the status of it there.

Hey everyone!

Thank you for your notes!

I have just received my green card and SSC. The green card took 2 months and the SSC I applied in July 25 and after 1 week and 1/2 I received it.

Now I need to see how to change my name, bc it came with my maiden name. Any thoughts?

Thank you very much.

Best

You are correct in everything you said. We have not received the actual GC in the mail yet (end of 3 weeks now). But after reading the posts here looks like we have to wait some more.

The DMV here in CA was not too sure about the temporary I-551 although after consulting with a supervisor, the lady approved the ID card. I am guessing the application for DL will also be processed. While applying for some jobs they also wanted to see the I-94 (which I guess does not exist anymore), or a copy of the actual GC.

DMV reps are idiots lol, your DL applications will be fine on that note.

Also it is ILLEGAL and against federal law for someone to refuse to hire you based on not having specific docs or to require specific docs from you. Meaning that if you have valid proof of your legal status according to the I-9 Employment eligibility form, they CANNOT require you to have your actual GC, since you have a valid temporary I-551.

As long as you have one of the documents on the list (in your case the temporary I-551) they cannot refuse to accept it, refuse to hire you based on that, or require you to submit "other" proof such as a physical GC.

Once you get your driver's license you will use that for your ID.

You never have to show a job your green card. You need an SSN and photo ID.

My wife's green card status changed to "optimized" on ELIS friday. Hopefully we will see her green card soon. Her social security card was not automatically sent, so we had to apply in person at the office. Still waiting for that to arrive.

Green card fee was paid June 16, she POE'd on July 11, at JFK.
