This debate reflects the political divide. Do you want a nanny or don't you?

ETA: Or more accurately, do you think 'they' need a nanny or do you think more highly of them?

I don't think anyone needs a nanny. I think there are of course those who are desperately lost *myself included* when they start digesting information about all this, but I think that people do not need to be coddled and assumed so inept that we need a virtual 'ASK HELP HERE' sign on specific members. I think it's clear from the threads who's more reliable than whom.

And, quite frankly, it's quite insulting to think new ppl can't find their way just like those before them. And let's not go into the 'but VJ's changing!' cos it's not

Rather than label a few "guides" I'd rather see many labelled "idiot" -- they are easier to identify.

Where HAVE you been John? Taking a nap?

I took Marlene on vacation. We just got back Sunday night after 30 days away. 25 days in the Philippines and 5 days in Thailand. Marlene shopped til I dropped. By the way. Each excess bag on Northwest from Manila is currently $220. An overweight bag is $600. We had 2 excess bags of shopping frenzy. We started with 1 excess bag and 3 overweight ... but I bought a garment box from Northwest ($10) and moved some from each overweight bag to the garment bag until they met the weight requirement (still 31 kg for Northwest from the Philippines) and paid for a second excess bag.

We also got directed to secondary at customs on the way home. They didn't believe we weren't bringing back agriculture products.

We lost one bag in Detroit, but it did finally arrive in OKC and I picked it up last night.

Now I'm ready for a nap!

I don't think it has much to do with a nanny-state mentality. Sometimes it makes sense, sometimes it doesn't. In a largely transient community like VJ it doesn't make much sense to designate someone an expert, especially since that means that people will be less likely to become experts themselves.

Unfortunately, I know of several long time members who have consistently provided reliable information that have all but given up helping people because of the amount of disinformation and bad advice by those who have yet to prove their reliability, and that's a shame to both this forum as well to those who come here seeking help and support.

I was sorry to read that. :(

I see several good ideas in this thread. Here's another idea: moderate behaviour more. Remove personal attacks and other rudeness, warn members who post that way, and ban them if they keep posting without being considerate of other people. Maybe some of that happens already, but I've seen a number of posts in which people are contributing nothing but their negativity.

If rudeness were kept more under control, perhaps those who genuinely want to help would find it easier to post.

I'm still relatively new to all of this. Despite reading this forum almost every day, I still don't have everything clear in my head. There's a lot of information to sort through, and figuring out who's who is another area again. But I want to thank those who do contribute reliable information. I've gained a lot from this forum. :)

Steven, it's a nice idea. But it creates too much liability for Admin, as well as anybody who might be designated. Plus every other point that's been mentioned is another reason that your well-intentioned idea will probably never come to pass.

You can't stop people from being careless. And that includes the readers as well as the posters. When I first found VJ, I lurked for several weeks. I read for facts, but I also read the threads and I got to know the 'players'. It didn't take too long to figure out who had some experience under their belt from who was new. And that included learning who the 'eager beavers' were - the nice people trying to help but who were still - well, clueless.

If somebody wants a pat, quick answer - well there's nothing we can do about that. If that pat answer happens to be wrong - oh well - anybody in that big of hurry probably will muck up their 'visajourney' in about a dozen other ways as well.

And as for the well-intentioned newbies - hopefully they'll learn from their mistakes and stick around once they are more seasoned. This whole journey consists of 'torch passing' - some or us stay around longer than others, but at some point we all move on.

Sort of like life. Which is really what this is all about, isn't it?

You always have a great way of saying things. Well said.

Older societies that have thrived over time have revered their elders (wiseman). They were the ones that everyone would turn to for advice. Is that nanny loving - you tell me? :P

I'm Indian. I'm very familiar with the concept. Let me tell you, I wish people didn't turn to elders so much. They're wrong more often than not. Some of the most backward things you'll hear in that country have their origins in the words of some form of elders council. That country would be much better off, especially in the rural areas, if people started doing some thinking of their own. Yes, it is nanny loving. It is wanting to be taken care of, wanting others to do the thinking for you. In this case, it's thinking others need that when IMO they don't. Lisa put it well, there is no reason to believe new VJers are any less capable of thinking and judging and differentiating for themselves.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.
