U-Haulin....

I plan on moving my stuff down to the states in a UHaul the first week in April. Since my husband is serving in Afghanistan, my mom and dad are going to help me do the move.

Anyone had any experience with this? I'm wondering which border I should go through...Peace Arch or Cloverdale crossing? Do I go through the regular line-up with all the other cars or in the line with all the commerical trucks?

I hear it could take up to an hour to process at the border. Since my parents will be coming with me in their car, I'm also wondering if I should activate my visa before the move to avoid all the wait. I live 1/2 an hour from the border. Would it be a problem if I just crossed the border to activate my visa and then came back to Canada that same day? Any comments?

Thanks.

Lots of us have either UHauled stuff ourselves, or used moving companies. I humbly suggest searching the "old" Canuck Clearing House thread, and look at the threads there--there's lots of great info :) (It's in my signature :) )

it shouldn't be a problem, to activate your visa and then go back to Canada.... it doesn't matter what border crossing you use

They probably will not let you cross the border again, your VISA is a ONE TIME entry, if you crossed back and then tried to cross again, they probably would deny you and you would have to start all over again, back to square one. Yes, Canada would let you back in, no questions asked, but going back would be a problem. I would not chance that. I have heard of people who have been able to cross without activating their VISA, but technically you are not supposed to do that.

It did take us some time, mainly waiting in line, and be forewarned there is not a bathroom available in the office (PeachArch), so make sure you go before you get to the border.

Your biggest hassle wil lprobably be with U-Haul itself!! Uhaul is famous for not have a truck available on the assigned date!! I booked mine well in a month in advance and did not know for sure until about 3 days prior to the move!! Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

why does every conversation on the Canada Boards always end up turning into a conversation about Timmies?

P.S. by the way , I will be taking anybody's orders for Timmies before I leave for my trip

I can't see why you'd have a problem crossing and activating it and then crossing again...I HOPE it's not a problem! I'm planning on doing the same thing! I plan to cross the day I get my visa and then go back the following weekend to get more of my stuff. I certainly don't plan to move it all at once, or to wait until I get my little plastic card.

You can always ask to be sure, that's what I plan to do. :) But I can't see why they'd have a problem with it...
