An unintended consequence of family-friendly word filters

Most forums will warn, ban or suspend a user for typing around the language filter as a TOS violation.

Seems that you're unhappy here.

I don't care why the filter is in place.

The words would be filtered unless purposely turned off and you must be signed into the site in order to turn off the filter. You can even limit the filter to certain portions of the website. I've been a part of websites that have a content hidden adult only section that requires registered members to post XX number of times and apply to have the ability in which to even post in the adult only section.

I am member of a site that uses the same software, that does exactly that. Most of us malcontents in the CEHST forum have suggested that.

As for all the complaining etc. You would think the subscription fee was 200 bucks a month. It basically boils down to this. On occasion a member will get their posts deleted, moved or edited. When that happens they see one of the other 500 posts that day, that was similar and went unnoticed and did not get moved, deleted or edited, and then they feel they be being singled out. It's a political forum and the conservatives think there is a liberal bias and the liberals think there is a conservative basis, any many spend the better part of their time in the forum, seeking out inconsistent examples. Usually it is the posters that push the envelope the most, that holler the loudest when they get bit. I myself have been guilty of some or all of the above listed behaviors, so I am not pointing fingers.

As for your sig, It got brought up in our forum, it was funny and I don't think anyone really thought you were trying to bypass the filter, it's just that you are in a leadership position, and when you are, and break a rule it gets magnified.

Overall most of you organizers and Mods do a good job, and in the end a post getting edited on VJ, should score 1000 on a scale of 1 to 1000 in the importance of life's events. You got caught up in a game you don't play, with a set of characters that you would have to hang around with for months, to learn their subtle jabs and humor. You have been sucked into a game in the underbelly of VJ. In other words don't take any of it personally, Thanks for spending your time keeping everything running smoothly and that goes for all of you.

As for the word filter.. It has proved us great amusement and given us page after page, of something to talk about. In the end it's no big deal one way or the other to me, because xxxxxx and xxxxxx

Most forums do this? Not from my experience. The weird filter is ridiculous because the underlying reason for it is financial gain, not a desire for family friendly content.

If we were being family friendly, we wouldn't tolerate an off topic politics forum that is full of far right, fascist viewpoints.

A good number of us are unhappy with the way this site is run and selectively moderated by some of the mods. I think we stick around and endure the nonsense because we've developed a bit of camaradarie with one another. At least that's part of why I stick around, the other part is that I genuinely like helping people through this process when I can. I also hold out slim hope that maybe this site will improve in this regard over time.

That's the main reason I'm still here. I've been here for over 7 years, and developed many real (and in real life) friendships on here. I got a roommate on here, a co-worker, a couple of best friends I hang with frequently. I've gone on holiday with people from VJ. I've visited their houses and played with their kids. I went to a wedding once. This place is good, and has many good people on it. And when I joined VJ didn't even HAVE a mod. But it worked (if imperfectly) for the most part. Mods were originally mooted not as police, but as peacekeepers, as thread movers, as the people who kept the spam out. The position has become politicised for right or wrong, and quite a few of us are not happy with the heavy-handed, reactive strain of modding that is prevalent these days. None of us died before or had our boo-boos touched too much before this BS carnival took off and spun out of control. We are ADULTS, for Pete's sake (TOS compliant curse). We should be treated as adults, and not be subjected to asinine, condescending screeds on how we need to be mindful of the morality of the place, particularly if we're capable of stringing together a pretty sentence and should therefore "know better." Hogwash.

I've been an organiser (the story of how I lost those privileges is still idiotic) and I know full well what the everyday humdrum moving threads around business is like. This place can be a total mess, and frankly hats off to the orgs for doing their job. What VJ needs more of is good organising, and less of the ridiculous "let's make this a teachable moment" modding.

I really think they should mail all people who make over 50 posts a month a check. I think 45 bucks sounds about right .

That's an odd statement. Even far right fascist types have families. Are you trying to say that 'family friendly' must mean progressive/liberal?

Also, if it was so he could make a profit. So what . If a person invests a huge amount of time, effort and money into something, why would making operating decisions that would lead to a return on their effort be a bad thing . It's not like any of us have anything invested here.

HOWEVER, I am an organizer, not a moderator.

I referred to you as a member of the moderating team. I did not call you a moderator. Please refrain from mischaracterizing the words of others.

See the image below. At the very top, it says "The moderating team". Below that, it lists members who make up the moderating team. You are listed, as you can see.

You said more good organizing. Are you implying that the current set of organizers are bad and need to be punished?

More reading comp fail today. I said "hats off" to the current orgs. "More good" can mean "more of the same good" in this context.

I know you're stirring.

... "hats off" to the current orgs.

Why do you want to take their hats off? I don't understand. Is this some kind of CABA prelude to a full disrobing?

You did not mean "more of the same". You clearly said VJ needs "more of" one thing and "less of" another.
