Driving in the US

I would just like to say that for anyone whose foreign spouce/fiancee does not drive teaching them to drive WILL be one of the most stressful situations you will face as a married couple!! The lines and the lights here in the US mean something and you have to follow them!! My husband didn't have to have a true license in the DR to drive his bike so trying to teach him the rules of the road here in the US has been a nightmare. I literally want to have a panic attack every time I get in the car with him!! Unfortunately, Houston has little to no good public transportation so not driving is not an option for him and we will get through it but sheesh! Who knew how stressful it would be?!

His driving test is today, praying he passes!

Just thought I would share and would love to hear stories from others who've had to teach their significant others how to drive!

We tried a couple of lessons together, not good. After enough of "it's not what you are saying but how you say it", we hired a private teacher for a few lessons and she got her license. Teaching your spouse or significant other anything, driving, skiing, golf etc., will definitely test your patience>

I sent my kids to driving school, and I am going to do the same for my (soon to be) wife.

When it comes to teaching how to drive, families are not the best as

the new driver just will not listen and pay attention.

My wife had never driven before her arrival in the U.S. and she, too, is from a place where the motor vehicle laws are, for lack of a better word, strictly optional. In a way, it was a good thing that she never drove in Colombia because I had no bad habits of hers to break. I taught her myself without too many stressful moments -- going from empty parking lots, to residential and other lightly traveled, low-speed driving and, finally, to rush hour traffic and highway driving. I knew it would all be OK when she didn't stall the car (5-speed manual) on her very first attempt behind the wheel.

Now she tells me it scares her to see how cars drive in Colombia and that's why I have all the driving duty when we're there for a visit..

Good luck teaching a fellow dominican to drive! they never have respect for the roads lol You're not the only couple that face this issue though. I know plenty of women whose husband don't want to teach them how to drive and if they do they treat them like #######. The best thing is always to go to a driving school, it may cost you a few hundred bucks, but it's worth it and you won't run any risks with your insurance should you get into an accident.

Why wife is currently enrolled in a driving school, and it so much more relaxing for both my son and I (having an infant in the back seat is not an ideal situation when learning to drive) . She also likes their teaching method.

I highly recommend enrolling your non-driving spouse in one of those driving school. You will save your sanity. That's my take on it.

We were going to do lessons but he didn't want us to spend money on them. He actually spent most of his time practicing with a friend because I have a big truck which is not easy to learn in. I only got the last week of practice but that was enough!!

And the good news....he PASSED!!

To all those who still have to go through this.....good luck!! I wish you all more patience then I had!
