Traveling back to England to see my fiance

Okay, this may seem stupid, but I've read about foreigners getting turned away when they land (I think mainly the US). I've been to England twice already this year to visit my fiancé, and I'm leaving again in 3 weeks-going for 9 days. The last time I went the the guy wanted to see my return flight ticket, so I showed him my itinerary and he questioned why I was visiting again and looked very skeptical. Are they going to turn me away because I'm visiting my fiancé for a third time this year? I won't be staying, I have a job to go to the day after my flight lands. I think I'm being slightly paranoid because I miss him so much and not being able to see him in three weeks will just kill me. I think I'd just drop to the floor and cry hysterically if they denied me access to England...

Any thoughts? Or am I just being silly?

I am the petitioner.

Unlikely but always possible.

Well, I figure, they should see that the last two visits, I returned. I'll have my itinerary and I'll have my bus ticket from national express to Manchester already booked for my return flight…so, they should see that I'll be leaving. I think I'm just being paranoid. I miss my matt...

My then fiancee came over several times and never got a hard time, just make sure you have return flight details and know the address of where you will be staying. Should be fine,

You could always take it one step further and have your employer (HR or boss, whichever) write a letter and sign it stating the date you are expected to return to work. It may not be needed, but it's easy enough to have drawn up and may give you some peace of mind if you do run into some trouble. I am visiting my honey in November and I plan on doing that, even though it's my first trip there this year.

I had this issue in February of this year, because I was there last October and December for Christmas. They don't like seeing more than two trips into the country within a 6 month period - I know this because I asked her why I was getting a hard time from them. Thankfully, I had my return flight, a letter from my employer and a copy our NOA1 and they left me alone after I showed them everything. I would recommend you do the same. Good luck!!!

Well, I'll have a copy of my flight itinerary and I just booked a National Express coach ticket to and from liverpool. Not to mention, I left the last two times I visited. Manchester seems to be a fairly easy going airport…so hopefully I'll be okay.

The letter from your Employer is always a good thing to have with you. I was traveling the other way, way back when, and I always had one with me, signed and dated by my boss. That and the return tickets should be enough to prove your intent to return to the US.

Just remember to keep smiling, even if they decide to take their time. They're just doing their job.

Hopefully, you won't need any of it and you'll have a great visit.

In my experience, the UK border agents like to question US passport holder's intentions, but the only cases I've heard of an american being turned around at the border was when that person indicated an intention to work -- or look for work -- while in the UK on a tourist visa. Like their US counterparts, these UK border agents can lack a sense of humor: I know a guy who was turned around for joking that he might try and fulfill his childhood dream of trying out for a professional football team while vacationing in England.

I wouldn't sweat it too much, but if you're really worried, bring proof of ongoing employment in the US and return tickets. I think that is their main concern.

I'm the USC petitioner. My wife is British (now a USC!!!), generally awesome, and amazingly patient.

I got grilled going through security. Told it takes a long time to move here & I told the guy that's fine cuz I don't plan on it. My fiancé is moving to the states to live with me. He asked when that would happen, I said I didn't know cuz my government is slow-he have me a look-& I said Christmas, hopefully. But he let me through.

  • 3 weeks later...

I went earlier in August to London to visit my Fiancee(then she was still my girlfriend) and was not expecting the grilling I got. Barely had any sleep and was caught off guard. Thankfully I answered everything right and had my itinerary, hotel receipt, and the whole folder I had been compiling with information for our K1 . My question is I am going back the first week in October for 10 days and want to be sure I am better prepared. I will be sure to bring my NOA1, Flight Itinerary, and I want to bring a note from the Boss. Was should the note say? Also this time I will be staying in my Fiancee's flat will I be given any trouble for that?

Get your boss to write something on company headed paper saying "To whom it may concern, X is employed at X company, and is expected back at work on X after their vacation in the UK" Signed, manager. Something like that is all you need.

If you have the above things on you then you shouldn't get any trouble for staying at her flat, especially for a mere 10 day visit. Always expect questions and be happy if you don't get grilled, that was always my attitude when visiting my wife in the US and it will mean you never get caught off guard :P
