Death row inmate Joseph Wood remained alive, gasping for breath for nearly two hours after the state of Arizona began the execution. The convicted killer was pronounced dead at 3:59 p.m. PT, one hour and 57 minutes after the execution started.

The process began at 1:52 p.m. local time. After five minutes, officials reported Wood was sedated. At 2:02 p.m. the he began breathing. A minute later, his mouth moved.

Wood’s lawyers filed an emergency court appeal Wednesday after the lethal injection did not immediately take effect, leaving him "gasping and snorting for more than an hour."

"We respectfully request that this court stop the execution and require that the Department of Corrections use the lifesaving provisions required in its protocol," the lawyers said in the US District Court filing. "He is still alive. This execution has violated Mr Wood’s eighth amendment right to be executed in the absence of cruel and unusual punishment."

The court declined to step in, and the contingency plan was not enacted.

Good. Maybe they should televise it live. Let people see the end result for a dark heart filled with evil, instead of it being some gore filled Hollywood fantasy.

Are you suggesting we amend the constitution or just ignore it?

I think they would with the idea of televising executions.

Bahha the constitution is only important for guns, police searches and banning Obama care.

Yet, I can see quite a few folks thinking that tv executions would be good for America and the American way of life.

At what stage does a botched execution become a cruel and unusual punishment? Personally of course I think the execution is in itself cruel and unusual but being that it is legal and it is supposed to be carried out with the minimum of pain and discomfort (for all sorts of reasons not limited to causing unnecessary suffering to the person being executed) how many hours of still remaining alive and suffering does it take?

Ignore. Anything aside from the Second Amendment isn't really the Constitution anyways.

I am so proud of you Grasshopper

Something to watch when NASCAR is not on... There is only so much TRU TV can do for their demographics.

As not many actual executions take place in the US, it will not be long before we get Chinese executions and then some botched jobs by revolutionaries and the like in the 'what could possibly go wrong during an execution?' home video highlights.
