FedEx won't ship documents to resident in China

I tried to FedEx necessary documents to my fiancee in China using FedEx today,

and I was told it's actually China customs, and not FedEx, that is blocking the

express shipment to resident address in China.

Therefore, FedEx will only send it if it's business to business address.

This doesn't make any sense. I can and have sent cards to her in the past.

How stupid is this?

While I am waiting for my fiancee to find a company that one of her relatives works at

to accept the package, I am going to check with USPS and UPS,

and perhaps another FedEx agent.

Have you guys heard of such express delivery restrictions for other countries?

I think your story is skewed. Perhaps you are complaining, instead, that the packet is currently with China Customs Office?

So here is the scoop on this...

I ended up talking to two different agents and got similar but slightly different stories.

The first agent says, Chinese customs doesn't allow individuals between US and China

to send paper documents to each other, and therefore, my documents can't be sent.

A second agent says Chinese customs doesn't allow private letters to be be sent,

but non-private documents are OK. When I told her it was fiancee visa related

documents to be submitted to US embassy, she said that should be OK.

So I think they must have internal web site they can look up to see

various delivery restrictions.

After this, I just went to a FedEx store, and was able to send the package

without any hassle, and should arrive by noon on Monday.

As a side note, I had sent a mother's day card for her mother via regular USPS mail before

and it finally showed up 8 weeks later...way past the mother's day.

Keeping my fingers crossed for the FedEx package being on time.

I always recommend EMS - in the U.S., either Priority Mail Express International, or Priority Mail International are part of the same global consortium. EMS will deliver to ANY address in China as part of the China Postal service.

But it sounds like you don't have a delivery OR a customs issue - simply an agent in the U.S. issue. It should go through just fine.

I have never heard the the Chinese custom did not allow personal letters from outside of China. This is Bull!

When I went back to China last year, my husband sent be several documents and packages and gift boxes. All went through very fast and no hassle or what not!

That was kinda weird! I wonder if it was Fedex's problem. We never used Fedex, always EMS from the post office or UPS.

I sent mountains of documents to Candy by DHL while she was in Hong Kong. Never a problem. On customs declaration I just wrote "Documents only, no monetary value".

Ah but Hong Kong, being a Special Administrative Region (SAR), I believe that it is handled a little bit differently than the rest of the People's Republic of China. Perhaps with kid gloves, rather than boxing gloves. It is anyone's guess how much difference this handling results. The CCP apparatchiks in Beijing certainly do not want to screw the "golden goose" that is Hong Kong.
