It’s not a crime if you don’t have the income to make child support payments, but it is a felony when you have the money and you are not paying on purpose. A series of investigative reports were done in Milwaukee regarding social media, and how it is helping investigators determine who is broke and who isn’t.

3-year-old Casey has Leukemia. His mother, Jennifer Cvikel, has been by his side through a year and a half of suffering. He has had to go through chemotherapy, spinal taps, and week-long hospital stays. This courageous boy even had to relearn how to walk, and with strength and charisma he’s pushing through. Not only has his father, John Rau, been missing in action, but Cvikel has only received child support payments totaling $189 in three and a half years. That amount is equivalent to 14 cents per day since Casey was born.

Rau is currently facing criminal charges with evidence investigators have gathered from his Facebook page. On his page, he has posted pictures of what he calls his new “family whip,” updating his status stating that he has a new job, and bragging about how much money he makes.

When FOX6 Investigator Meghan Dwyer confronted him in court, he was consistent with his statement about not having any money. He also said he didn’t know his son was sick until last Christmas, and he intends to start making child support payments. Cvikel believes Rau needs to understand where she is coming from and told Dwyer, “I don’t have the choice to just turn around and walk away. That’s not an option for me.”

In another case, John McCroy (rap name- Mr. JakItDown) was ordered to make child support payments of $100 a month for his 5 year old daughter. Unfortunately her mother, Canience Haynes, has only received one payment back in 2010. Since then, he has been busy posting selfies with wads of cash, flaunting his jewelry, and making music videos in custom cars. He claims he has made money from selling mixtapes and told FOX6 Investigator Meghan Dwyer that he hasn’t paid his child support because he “died in a car accident.”

“I feel like if he could be out here being flashy that he can take care of our child,” says the mother of one of his children, Canience Haynes.

Luckily for Haynes, Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office agrees, and his flashy ways has led him to be faced with criminal. His social media posts have made him accountable. Maureen Atwell, an assistant district attorney at the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office said “I really think that it is not that they are too stupid to realize that this is evidence. I think they think nobody cares.”

Milwaukee Country District Attorney’s Office is making it known that they do care. Investigators are making sure if moms are left to raise kids on their own that the fathers are still accountable.

In these two cases, I think the "deadbeat" dads could be doing more and they should be doing more.

That said, it's easy to think that it's just the dads who are at fault.

However, there are also cases of "money-grubbing" moms who try to get every single cent from their exes and then some. They spend the child support money on brand new gadgets, diamond jewellery and designer clothes for themselves or save it all for cosmetic surgery procedures. What's the US government doing about these people?

Then there's the child support agency workers and judges, who appear to relish trying to bankrupt the dads, regardless of what they can afford, while telling them that it's illegal for them to be (military) retired.

Yet another sick system where the people (kids) who are meant to benefit from it, do not.

isn't child support based on the amount of money you earn? how do csa and judges relish bankrupting dads if they're enforcing a predetermined amount?

i mean, i don't know any moms who use child support to live lavish lives, but maybe i'm hanging out with the wrong crowd. i do know plenty of dead beats who refuse to work, move out of state, or job hop to keep from paying child support altogether. and ususally their reason for not paying is that the cs recipient doesn't need the money, the money should be 'going to the kids' and not their ex.

generally speaking, when dealing with exes and money without any sort of boundary as to how the money taken from one party and given to the other is to be spent, you're just asking for a bunch of finger pointing.

It cuts both ways for sure.
