I hope this is the right place to put this.

Last week, I went to the Social Security Administration office and applied for my SSN. At this location, they apparently do quite a few K1 SSN applications. I provided all the paperwork they required and the agent said it would take about 2-6 weeks to get to me.

He also mentioned that when they do all the background checks, because I am applying for AOS (Green Card etc) that USCIS may 'delete' my SSN Request. I asked why they would do that? And he said because I was applying for a Green Card. I asked if I received the Green Card, would the SSN be redundant or would I still need it (i.e. I need it in the state of California to change my drivers license). He said they are different and I would need SSN for work and credit etc. So, I asked again... if when the background checks happen and it shows that I am 'in process' of AOS and applying for a green card, why would my SSN application be deleted if they are not the same card and I need both? Didn't get much out of my question.

Can any one help me understand whether this is normal process? Or if I need to call and follow up? The application did go through and was submitted. Just not really sure what they mean by since I am in process of AOS that my SSN could potentially be deleted?

USCIS can no more "delete" your applications with the SSA than the SSA can "delete" your applications with USCIS.

Yep!

USCIS governs the visa process

SSA governs the SSN numbers along with the IRS

They are different systems and your application will not be deleted. The green card is different than a SSN and you will need both. Just think of how hard it was getting USCIS and NVC to communicate/work together on the visa... and they are *supposed* to be working together. lol.

.

SSN is a way to identify you like the SSA person said - its for work taxes etc. - a person can have a SSN without a green card

The green card shows that you are here as a resident as well as legally able to work -

The green card is one way to help verify that the SSN is actually yours. For instance - when you get your SSN, even though you are legitimately in the country and the government systems, it could still be flagged on things like credit/background checks since the SSN is under 5 years old.

However, I would follow up - and in the least just talk to another person in the office to clarify and ease your mind.

Thank you! That's what I thought... I didn't think it would delete or get cancelled. I will definitely go in and ask about my application. Other than that, it was pretty smooth. I provided my K1 visa paperwork, approved petition, my visa/passport, marriage certificate and birth certificate. Is there anything that I may have missed that they may have missed asking for?

Thanks!
