Hello Everyone,

I'm in the process for the K-1 visa and i would like to know if i can apply for the green card as soon as I get married in the US? Does it take the same time for people with the K-1 visa as everybody else? Are we allowed to have a travel authorization?

Thank you

Yes, you can apply for a GC as soon as you get married and get the marriage certificate. It will take 90 days to get the temporary work and travel permit. The GC can take up to a year for AOS from K-1 visa. But, in the meantime, you would have the travel and work permits and be able to live normally.

Hi there! Welcome to VJ!

Just to add to what Harpa advised, here's the VJ guide for AOS adjusting from K1: http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1k3aos

Emphasis on receiving the marriage certificate (NOT the marriage license) before filing the I-485 (AOS form).

We applied for my wife's AOS around mid-March this year, and she received her EAD/Travel Card mid-July. We live in NJ so I assume our petitoins goto the Vermont processing center, which is closest to us. We still have not received a Green card or interview appointment letter for the Green card.
