Hi all,

As a new immigrant in U.S. I'm getting confused for my next career here in U.S. I have an education degree, but it seem some people really need an experience for becoming a teacher in U.S. I can talk most words in English but still take time to understand in American local accent especially here in Texas. But I do understand the news from the TV. Now I just work part time as a Child care. So being a teacher should very good in a communication.

I do love to create something, so my next plan might be becoming a chef or a fashion designer. So guys, especially you already in U.S. for several years or the Americans. Which one better for me between a chef or fashion designer according to paycheck and the opportunity in the future. One thing being a chef, especially for my local area. There are so many restaurants but some just being closed easily because not too many customer like those restaurants or the food not really good. I like cooking since I was 10 years old. For fashion, I have created the design, but my mom who sewed that for me.

My plan I will take some course or college for these. I would really appreciate your replies. :)

Id go for being a chef. i enjoy cooking as well, and its such a fun thing to do. Dont go for the small family resturants to work at, find a good one that is not only local but national, they are more than likely not to close too quickly. there is college for that but they have really good colinary (sp) art schools out there. thats just my opinion :P

I suggest first and foremost you identify your passions and discover your strengths.

You mentioned Communication that is a very good strength that can cross into any career.

Once you discover your true passions and your strngths follow a career path and embraces those.

Teaching in America is a great career and a lot of places are in desperate need for quality, Passionate teachers who can communicate.

If your passion is fashion design or chef. then why not go after that dream, enroll in a community college take some courses and learn as much as you can.

While you are studying your passion or working on a new career path try to get your teaching credentials as a fall back and work as substiute teacher or a Private tutor.

Most important:

Find a career that you are passionate about. If you have that passion you will be happy and succesful doing what you Love.

good Luck.

My wife was an English teacher for 17 years in the Belarus public schools and has an education degree from a Russian university in Siberia where she was born. Since getting her Conditional Green Card she has been working part-time at the local Catholic school near our house in daycare / aftercare. She speaks excellent English and I have encouraged her to look into the Alternative Certification Program offered by the Houston Independent School District. It is my understanding that the program allows qualified foreigners to work as a teacher (under supervision) while taking courses to qualify as a certified teachers in Texas public schools.

Part of the process to take part in the HISD ACP involves having foreign degrees evaluated and translated to English. HISD has a list of companies that they will accept accreditation of credentials from. I have supplied the link at the end of this post for more information about HISD ACP.

So far, my wife has not pursued participating in the progam for personal reasons; but it is available if she wishes to resume her teaching career at a time in the future.

I learned about the program from my neighbor that participated in the program and is now a Texas certified teacher at an HISD elementary school. She was the same neighbor that recommended my wife for her present job at the Catholic school. So I know the program is legitimate and administered by the local school districts. Dallas has a similar program for its public city schools and I'm sure it is a statewide program.

I hope this helps. Here is the link for Houston as well as Dallas:

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)
