Hello,

I'm trying to buy my finance's place ticket with Avianca out of El Salvador. However, when I call they say he must have a round trip ticket in order to leave. Does anyone know, is this some national law or just some restriction of Avianca. I see on other forums that people have bought one-ways for their fiance no problem. Has anyone gotten their fiance on Avianca with only a one-way? When I called the call center, they said I can buy a one-way but be advised he could have problems at the airport. Is this the case with other airlines? Absolutely no one seems to know the answer to this question including TSA, Immigaration/Border Control, nor the US Visa Help Desk. What's going on here.

Please help!!!!!

A round trip ticket is not required for someone entering the US with a K-1 visa. Not sure why that particular airline would say it is.

I live in Guatemala, right next door, and i've bought several one ways for me and my fiance when we've traveled and nothing has ever happened. The culture is quite similar, so, i'm thinking what they are reffering to is she may have an issue at the POE because the callcenter doesn't know the story. Buy it online.

Hello,

Please help!!!!!

You are dealing with poorly trained people. First, at the airlines they are assuming that he is traveling on a tourist or other non-immigrant visa and would need proof of departure for the CBP to allow entry. Second, TSA is clueless as they are only responsible for checking IDs and allowing access to the boarding gates--they have nothing to do with immigration. I am a little surprised by the Immigration or boarder control people, but that is assuming you did not talk to someone who just answers the phone like at the USCIS phone number. You need to get transferred to someone who actually works for the CBP or USCIS to get anything close to a correct answer. You got the canned response from a drone that answers the phone and if your question does not fit into a predefined response they may make one up that is totally wrong.

A RT ticket is not REQUIRED for a person on a K-1 visa or CR-1/IR-1 visa as these are meant to come to the US and STAY, so there is no need to have a return ticket. However, you can purchase a RT or a one-way based on cost. IF you do purchase a RT because it is cheaper than the one-way, I highly recommend you cancel the return leg, or suffer the fate of those that had the airlines sell the seat and not remove them from the manifest.

Good luck,

Dave

Thanks everyone!!!! After talking with several airlines including AA and United who all said I needed a RT ticket, I called back to Avianca and told them I wanted a one way for my K1 visa fiance and the transaction went through no problem. Imagine! I guess I should know this by now, but when dealing with Central America, it's totally random who will get things accomplished for you. In one call, they say no, but in another call they say yes.

Yay!!!! Here's to Alejandro coming July 31 to Chicago!!!!
