More actors need to run for president. At least they can deliver their lines on cue. This is what America wants.... Personality. That is why old Ronnie Ray-gun was so popular.

Mind you he had a strong woman behind him...... Margaret Thatcher. :)

When I look back I really can't believe it either.

So you're really a conservative Republican who is an anti gun nut and wants to penalize legal gun owners for the action of criminals. But that sounds more like a liberal from MA. You must be bisexual.

Well you cant be president unless you believe in a higher power. Some just had a more real world connection.

They're all actors.

That's what gets me. Neither party represents the people they try to pretend to represent. I get the propaganda images, sure - but the cheap talk doesn't count. What counts is following the money, from the hands of the banks and military-industrial-security complex (and some other special interests from the Grey Panthers of AARP to the Trial Lawyer's PACS) to the laws we have to live under and the wealth our government bestows upon them with special favors.

Both parties voted for the bank bailout instead of arresting them. Dems and Repubs alike took special low-interest loans from Countrywide, including Obama. Any old war seems to go just swell with all of them, so long as the first lady's Helicopter company or the Vice President's Haliburton is raking in billions.

But the OP, you know: religion. We covered that for two days straight at homeschool here. The kids can decide for themselves, but they're being taught that there is no God and science tells the truth. We like to tell both sides of the story like that. We report: you decide.

How is God a side of education? God is a side of magical fairy land.

Well,if you believe in a god that is your right. But there have been thousands of gods over centuries of human existence.

As to teaching there is no god, that is blatantly untrue. Publicly funded schools cannot teach religion because it would/should come foul of the 1st Amendment. It is there protecting your children from being taught about a god/religion you might disagree with.

As to science, it is really our only tool to help us describe, understand and manipulate the cosmos we live. It has given you everything you have today. It maintains your health. Lights your world. Makes food plentiful and available. It makes the computer possible, you use to post on VJ.

Science gets thing wrong but that is its strength. It allows ideas/concept to grow/evolve. If a theory is found to be erroneous through testing, it is dropped in search of the correct answer. It is not fixed dogma, that has to be, no matter the over whelming evidence.

Well we're homeschooling and the law says we can do whatever we want. No registration, no teacher certification, no testing, no oversight. 100% freedom.

So religion is part of our schooling. But we cover it academically, so as you say it is make-believe. We want them to understand that fear of death motivates people to invent faiths, and that the leaders of those faiths or government can then turn it to their own ends for greed, lust, power, etc.

So the sexual abuse of minors, the religious wars, persecutions, the anti-science nature of it, etc.: these are very real social costs of superstition and worthy of study. Again though, we don't want to influence their thinking on this.

I agree with your right to do this.

But I see no way to teach religion in public schools. The government has a responsibility to teach without bias IMO.

You need to re-read the fact we're homeschooling. We don't get government funding. As a matter of fact our oldest isn't even permitted to enroll in any place that accepts government money until 14 months from now when he can enroll as a kindergartener.

But at present his general reading is third grade level and in science he is off the charts. When he is finally eligible for kindergarten there's no telling where he'll be, but we can't enroll him with kids that can't even read.

We have had nothing but discouragement and harassment from the government and schools in terms of educating our children.

I totally agree with both of you above about public schools and religion.

Just curious but what kind of harassment?

They do teach kids about myths but they don't class modern religions in with them. Shame.

From NJ's public school standards document. By the end of grade 8, objective number 6.2.8.D.3.e.

Compare and contrast the tenets of various world religions (i.e., Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, and Taoism), their patterns of expansion, and their responses to the current challenges of globalization.
