It costs a fortune and takes a loooong time to bring anything to a shop here. But there's lots of youtube videos or google-ranger pieces out there on how to replace components.

I just replaced the keypad on my keyboard because one of the kids spilled water on it. Might as well just buy another laptop at the prices they charge in town to fix that kind of thing. But including expedited shipping it was like $86.

True... I have used google a few times to find out how to disassemble car parts and computers. There is some good information there...

I'm with you on this. I'm thrifty and don't see the point in replacing a perfectly good machine just because the keyboard started to go, so I ordered one off ebay. I think it cost me $35 all in for replacement (since I don't live out in the wilderness like you, and I wasn't in a tearing hurry), plus dinner at a Chinese restaurant with a friend who bartered repair for a meal. Meanwhile my beloved was trying to buy me a new one, but I'd rather he sock that money away for something more useful. I reckon the laptop has another 3 or 4 years in it, which will mean I'll have had nearly a decade of use by maintaining it and replacing parts. My parents always told me to buy the best quality you can afford and take care of things once you have them.

Mr U, my beloved, is slathering over getting a new Macbook Pro so he can do better video editing (he makes music videos as a sideline for friends in bands). I look at the price tag and would never be able to justify the expense.

Well yeah, I'm maxing out what I can do tax wise on IRA's and SEP's (Self Employment Plan). It's ridiculously complicated to figure out how to allocate between them under the rules but we want every penny in there we can shelter legally. We are modest income and have children that will need college educations so they can afford booze and hookers. I'm hearing $1500 here on a laptop. That's a lot of money to me right now.

Yeah, i don't think people that are asking for advice on whether to buy a mac or pc can handle any of that.

In-Korek, kimosabe. I know quite well how to do so. Have built a few computers from scratch. But I have little knowledge of Mac's other than their fans seem to be VERY loyal and they cost more to buy up front.

I also know they tend to mount programs rather than installing them as does Windoze. Less files scattered about.

Anything that costs way more for almost no reason gets rated the best by the DBs that buy the product in question. Its like Harley Davidson's. You buy it, you're in the club and you're better than everyone. That's what a mac is.

Agree on HD. Way more money for way less product. But you are sooo cool.

Yeah, and you only wave at other Harley riders because everyone else is below you.

This has always been at the heart of the PC vs MAC debate. It's not hard to take the average PC laptop down to it's base components and put it back together. Apple's strategy over the years has made it purposely hard to do this. It was a bad business decision 30 years ago and it's what still keeps their market share lower today.

Apple became successful by making people upgrade every 2-3 years. Not everyone wants or needs to do that.

The vast majority of Apple's revenue and profits come from their iDevices, not their Macs.

Harley riders are better. Mac buyers are sheep.

Nowadays yeah - but they didn't start out that way. They developed their business model selling computers.

At one point you needed proprietary screwdriver just to get the back cover off a Mac. That was a PIA in the days before the internet. People just bought new ones.

I love riding my Beemer because I don't feel obligated to dress like a wanna-be 1% and my 68 ci boxer puts more to the rear tire than those oil drippin' 88 ci V's and they all still wave at me.

...and I love my new Mac after a lifetime of being a PC drone....Baaaaahhh.

Holly I just read that, I sound like some sort of hipster douche.

They did start out being a computer company, but they changed their name from Apple Computers about 7 years ago or so. They are largely an iDevice company today, with more on the way. The iPhone and iPad are their bread and butter. They have been propriety for a while now. They even did it the the new Mac Pro. They want you as a captive customer, and as long as the loyalists accept and they make huge profits, it will stay that way.

Ride what you like, be what you want to be. Do it for you, not because it's the in thing to do. Harley's used to be for people who liked Harley's, just as Apple was once all about Macs. Both groups were different and marched to the beat of a different drummer. They were a small group of individualists. Today, that is no longer true. I see 10 year old kids walking around with iPhones. You can buy them at WalMart and 7-11. I fail to see the cool factor. Apple has become what it once abhorred.

Amen.

I own a Harley but I'll ride anything with two wheels. I consider all bikers on the road my brothers no matter what patch they wear. I have shared the road, meals, booze and weed with them all. If it has a keyboard and a screen I will take it apart and put it back together - Mac, PC, the works. Life is too short..

Real Harley riders don't associate with people who ride rice burners.
