From what little I know, Mac airs can go about 9 hours on a charge, and the larger models 7-8 hours. Haven't seen a Windoze version come close to that (though they may be better now that SSDs are being used).

I have heard Mac owners using their stuff 7-10 years. A PC rarely makes it more than 3.

Not that I do a lot of graphics, but I hear Apple rocks against WinXX for that.

That's what I mean by simple to understand. I would like to double my battery life, sure. As they get older, they are especially bad and I don't want to buy a new battery either.

We let our kids use them for school so it means there is a premium on lower prices as opposed to longer expected life. Less money at risk and lower replacement costs for spilling water on them, dropping them, pulling keys off, etc.

Buy me a mac and I'll test it out for you. Give you a professional review.

God bless Dave, and I really mean that from the minute the computer arrives.

Dave beat me to the punch.

please elaborate on exactly how Macs are superior in quality power and design

Boot up time for a Mac is now around 11 seconds. 2 seconds from sleep mode. My laptop is usually around 20-30 seconds from sleep, and a light meal can be prepared between power on and usable. (Not much bloat ware on mine, I stripped it when I bought it).

That's about all I know on the differences.

Oh, don't forget to go to church on Wednesday. Amen!!

The Mac's with flash storage boot in 15 seconds or so, just like a Windows machine with a SSD. Comparing a laptop with flash storage against one with a 5400 rpm hdd isn't fair. Comparing a $400 laptop to one that costs $1500 isn't fair. PC laptop not making it past 3 years, total BS. The 13" Macbook Retina doesn't have a discrete graphics card like the 15" does. It depends what you want to do with it. RAM is not upgradable on the Macs, it is soldered in so you need to make sure you get the amount of RAM you will need for the life of the computer. They also use propriety flash storage, not exactly a ssd like most other computers.

The Macs have better battery life and they have the best touchpad in the the business.

I have had macs my whole life and only had one faulty component that was replaced. I was out of warranty too, but they did it free because I was a "valued customer." I like a company that will reward me for my loyalty. So, I don't think replacing components is generally a thing that people do. Maybe on PCs? Idk.

Yeah, i don't think people that are asking for advice on whether to buy a mac or pc can handle any of that.

Precisely. No one replaces laptop parts anymore and if you need to do it you take the product to any PC clinics and they'll do it for you.

This has always been at the heart of the PC vs MAC debate. It's not hard to take the average PC laptop down to it's base components and put it back together. Apple's strategy over the years has made it purposely hard to do this. It was a bad business decision 30 years ago and it's what still keeps their market share lower today.

Apple became successful by making people upgrade every 2-3 years. Not everyone wants or needs to do that.

True as it may be, I believe most individuals buy computers as they do cars: emotionally.

If you need a computer to check e-mail, surf the net, create simple documents and spreasheets, then an inexpensive PC will suit your needs as well as any Mac. You don't need a 768GB flash RAM and multiple processors, unless you're working at Los Alamos or Pasadena. You won't need much of anything at all, and it should last you long enough. In fact, for most people a tablet would do just fine, speaking from a technology POV.

Having said that, where I believe PCs are lagging is that hard disks and CD-roms - as anything with moving parts - is a technical issue waiting to happen. Everything is in the cloud today, so there is no need to equip machines with power-hungry pieces that are going the way of the Dodo bird.

Again, it all depends on the profile of the user but IMHO many buy far more machine than they will ever need.

It costs a fortune and takes a loooong time to bring anything to a shop here. But there's lots of youtube videos or google-ranger pieces out there on how to replace components.

I just replaced the keypad on my keyboard because one of the kids spilled water on it. Might as well just buy another laptop at the prices they charge in town to fix that kind of thing. But including expedited shipping it was like $86.

I'm with you on this. I'm thrifty and don't see the point in replacing a perfectly good machine just because the keyboard started to go, so I ordered one off ebay. I think it cost me $35 all in for replacement (since I don't live out in the wilderness like you, and I wasn't in a tearing hurry), plus dinner at a Chinese restaurant with a friend who bartered repair for a meal. Meanwhile my beloved was trying to buy me a new one, but I'd rather he sock that money away for something more useful. I reckon the laptop has another 3 or 4 years in it, which will mean I'll have had nearly a decade of use by maintaining it and replacing parts. My parents always told me to buy the best quality you can afford and take care of things once you have them.

Mr U, my beloved, is slathering over getting a new Macbook Pro so he can do better video editing (he makes music videos as a sideline for friends in bands). I look at the price tag and would never be able to justify the expense.
