My fiance will be landing at JFK July 30th 2014 and I am flying up from NC so I can travel with her for the remainder of the trip to NC. I have free tickets on South West but SW doesn't fly into JFK. So I am flying into ISP McAuthor airport at the same arrival time as her.

My question is..........how can we communicate with each other once we are both on the ground? I am really worried about this because she isn't very familiar with traveling. Plus I want to be able to find her when I get to JFK. Any ideas?

You have a cell phone correct? Can she call you from a pay phone?

Otherwise, why not just meet at the gate you'll fly to NC from?'

Good luck

she'll have to clear Immigration and Customs.

There is ONE huge exit door/area for that.

You tell her to wait for you there.

You wait for her there, also, on the other side.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

You use a pay phone to call. Should be no more than a dollar in quarters.

I would change your flight time so you arrive and can get to JFK and meet her at the exit of customs and immigration when she arrives. Pay phones are becoming obsolete plus it would be a long distance (LD) call from a NY pay phone to a NC cell phone. People forget this because cell phones have "free" long distance but POTS (Plain old telephone service) is still regulated and must charge for LD if the area codes are different and not part of an over-lay (two or more area codes for a single city and everybody must use 10-digit dialing to make all calls from a land line)

Not sure about shipping time, as it is now 12 days to her flight, but you could sent her a very cheap pre-paid cell phone so she can call you--pre-program your number into the phone and charge it for her and send along a convert plug. Either that or have her wait for you at a pre-designated location at JFK--i.e. just outside the customs and immigration exit unit you arrive or pick some other place that will have seats so she can wait for you--baggage claim has a few or she can sit on the carousel.

Good luck,

Dave

Thank you for all the suggestions. I was thinking of having her buy wifi time at JFK with my credit card on her phone, which she will not have access to any US cell phone service, and text me via "Whats Up" or "viber". I just want her to be able to contact me if she has any issues at customs or gets lost or something.

I thought about a pay phone but that isn't very convinent, sending her a prepaid phone is out at this point in the game, and having her wait at the exit is an option. Just that it will take me an hour at least to get from ISP to JFK and there are no earlier flights I can get on SW. I am sure everything will workout but I understand this will be a stressful time for her.

How about the day before? If you are that worried, I would take the day off of work and fly up the day before, get a motel/hotel near JFK and be there for her. If that is not an option then get in your car and drive. It should only take about 14 hours give or take. If it was me, I would fly up the day before so I could be there to meet her.

There are plenty of free wifi spots at JFK. Do a Google search for them.

She will not be allowed to use her phone when going through customs.

When I fly home to the US, CBP explicitly warns all passengers not to take out their phones or use them until they are out if the customs area.

I visited my fiancee last April, POE was JFK. He payed wifi spot with his credit card (It was called Boingo I think) and gave me his password. After I finished with customs I called him on Viber and we met few minutes later. That option worked for us.

Thanks Lelyze, I joined Boingo and I am having her download it. I didn't know about monthly subscriptions using boingo. Thanks again for the great idea.
