How do people find out when their approved K-1 petitions arrive to / depart from the NVC? I called the NVC and found out when it had arrived, but my understanding is that the NVC sends no notifications like USCIS does. Do people just call the NVC a while later and learn when their petition was shipped off to the overseas embassy?

Have you got your NVC case number?

You can track your case by entering the case number including the 3 letters here: https://ceac.state.gov/ceac/ under "IMMIGRANT" and "Check my visa application status"

The way we found out is by calling. We kept calling everyday and kept getting "has not arrived yet" until one day they were able to give our case number. We asked how long does it take to forward to embassy and they told us " it should be forwarded within the next couple of weeks, if it is longer than they may need addition information. " Knowing me, I call within the next couple of days anyways and they told me the petition actually just has been forwarded to the Embassy and you can check on the CEAC tracking website by typing in your case # . When it says "Ready" then you can start calling the Embassy to make sure they got it physically.

It didn't dawn on me to ask for the case number. I assumed that since it hadn't been "processed" and sent to the overseas embassy yet that it hadn't yet been assigned a case number. I know that it arrived because the lady told me that it had gotten there last Friday. Should it have already been assigned a case number as soon as they put the information into their system?

Yes a case number should of have been given already. Try calling them first thing on Friday.

I called the NVC and got my case number, and also learned that the petition was sent to the overseas embassy on 7/15. However, when I enter the case number on the CEAC website (regardless of whether i select immigrant or non-immigrant [technically the K-2 is a non-immigrant visa, but some advice above was to select immigrant]) the site says that my case number is invalid. Does the case need to arrive at the overseas embassy before the case number is recognized?
