I would highly recommend having an appointment... there was a lot of people at the DMV when I went. The line up for non-appointments were ridiculous and when you have an appointment, you generally get to the window right away. The written test portion is in a room with a bunch of monitors. Once you past that, you will have to do a driving test as well. Make sure you have your SSN (number is OK, the card may take a few weeks).

There is no time limit on the written test. You can take your time reading each question carefully. You have 3 chances to pass the written test. If you fail 3 times you have to fill out another application and pay the fee again.

One more thing..If you choose to walk in to take the test, you have to show up before 4:30pm. After that they stop giving written exams for the day.

Good luck!
