Any Ireland POE experience?

Hi everyone,

My husband and I are currently living in the UK and are hoping to hear about an interview at the London embassy soon. We eventually want to end up in Atlanta but are looking at various options for our Point Of Entry.

We have heard that you can clear US Immigration before you leave if you fly to the US from Ireland (Dublin or Shannon).

Does anyone have any experience with Ireland as a POE when entering the US on an IR-1/CR-1/Green Card Visa?

Any experience or advice is welcomed. My hubby would prefer to clear US Immigration before we fly, if possible. Even though it'll be a straight forward case, I think everyone gets nervous when encountering US Immigration

Thanks for your help & best of luck to everyone!

My husband's visa was K1. We cleared Dublin POE in September 05. It's usually been reported as a fairly easy POE. The only problem we had was the officer failed to give my husband the I94 and I was too dumb to catch it! (Had to scramble for a replacement in the States).

You will still have to clear Customs once you are stateside.

You normally clear immigration at Dublin but not always. It depends which pier you depart from as only one (Scratching head I think it is B but I may have remembered incorrectly) has US immigration. So an operational change may mean that you will clear immigration at the first POE in the USA rather than DUB.

I have used Dublin many times and found the process painless. It is always nice to land in Philly and snicker as you look through the glass wall at the massive lines in immigration you are by passing :D

Yes, it is the Terminal B, the round one. I have never heard about someone flying from Ireland and having to go through immigration in the US, though.

I cleared immigration in Dublin and there were no problems whatsoever, everyone was nice and helpful.

If the inbound flight from the USA is delayed for example there may no longer be a gate available for it to use at Pier B so a move to another pier would mean no preclearance. It often happens with US airways PHL-DUB. Likewise sometimes there is a "late" EI flight at 5.40pm from DUB to JFK that doesn't clear immigration in Dublin but in JFK as they only keep the US immigration post open until 3.00pm.

The downside of course is when someone is refused entry by CBP and everyone has to sit on the tarmac whilst their bags are located and offloaded

My wife and I went thru Shannon and it was very quick and everyone was helpful. The CBP officer did give me the incorrect info about when to apply for removal of conditions but that was no biggie. I knew more about the process than he because of all the research I did and from info posted on this site but I wasn't going to argue with the guy and show him up in front of all the other CBP guys lest I be denied entry and given a 10-year ban for being a smart-###!

Other than that, I spent 15 minutes total at POE with the CBP guys and all went well.

This is very helpful to hear about! If I'm understanding correctly: if you want to clear immigration using Dublin as your POE, you should TRY to get a flight out of Terminal B? But, you also have to realize that this could change?

Any such changes in Shannon?
