SSN Question

We checked "yes" my husband wants SSN generated when we filled out the DS260 online. At POE I asked the officer "when will the SSN be sent?" He says it won't and that we have to go to a SSA office to apply for one. Reading now, I saw that we should wait a while until we go to apply for one since it might accidentally produce two numbers. Since we only entered the country yesterday should we wait a few weeks? I wanted to try to get everything moving ASAP, but I certainly don't want any issues.

No it won;t produce two numbers. Some just go to SSN after a week that way he is entered in system. So like next week just go.

Wife arrived yesterday. I was going to ask when can she expect the SS #. She is eager to go back to work and I can't blame her. You already responded to my question here. So I guess we will head to the SS office sometime next week. Thank you.

I called the SSA office today and was told we need the greencard to get an SSN. The lady told me that we could try to apply for it without the GC but that it might take 8 weeks to get approved. She said if we wait until we get the GC then it'll be a shorter wait. I told her we have A# but that didn't seem to matter.

It's now been exactly a week since we've entered the USA. No welcome letter or anything yet in the mail. I think we'll go ahead and go in tomorrow and see what can be done. I certainly don't want to wait months for the GC for my husband to get a job. Hell, he's already applied to two!

But you do have a green-card. The temp stamp in your passport. You need to be talking to an supervisor at SSN office. Not all there are versed and mighty stupid. Really sorry for your delay.

Before going back to the that local SSA office e-mail the mail the main SSA office and explain your situation. Hopefully they will respond with a nice e-mail you can print out and take with you to train the idiots at your local office. You have and I-551 stamp in your passport. You should ask the SSA employee what is the USCIS document number for a GC? I-551. So what do you think a stamp with the same document number as a GC means? Oh, never mind as I am sure they would make up some stupid answer and blow you off. Yet these people are being paid by tax payers and working people in the US and cannot do their job correctly. SIGH!

Just got back from SSA! Everything went smoothly, we had no problems at all. We filled out the SSN request form when we got there. When we were called we took up the form, his passport with CR1 visa, and birth certificate. The lady didn't ask for the BC, only his passport. She asked for I94 and I told her we have the I551 and showed her the visa in the passport. She typed in a bunch of stuff and we should have his SSN card in 5 to 7 days! Woo!

Only issue is immigration listed him as having two first names instead of a first and middle name. I figured it'd be best to get the card and fix the name later with SSA instead of USCIS. I know what a nightmare USCIS is and I'd prefer to deal with them as little as possible in the future!
