NEW DELHI, July 16 (UPI) --A deadly crash caused by a speeding Indian Army truck has sparked violent protests in Kashmir.

The accident occurred Wednesday morning when an army vehicle was speeding on the Srinagar-Baramullah highway near the city of Srinagar. As the army vehicle attempted to pass another vehicle, it crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a taxi, killing six people.

A BBC correspondent reported "massive protests" erupted after the accident, with protesters throwing stones at security forces and attempting to set fire to the army vehicle.

The army driver was taken into police custody and arrested.
