seriously. atheists feigning compassion, when clearly that is substance only the religious can claim.

I found in my life experiences that the unwashed are generally more compassionate than the pious.

But I think you were being sarcastic

There better be because it becomes quite clear in this thread that there sure ain't no Christians to be found on these shores.

Thank god for that.

Why not welcomed in their own country by the catholic church. When 1/3 of girls 10-16 years of age are raped making this journey you would think this trip would not be encouraged.

I don't see any encouragement in the quote. He seems to be saying that children who make the journey (which he acknowledges is dangerous) should protected. Seems reasonable to me.

For real though, how can people who's lord and savior is a pacifist come to the conclusion that it's his will to turn away people in need. I've never understood how people managed that type of hypocrisy. Can a christian that want's to "ship these kids back to where they came from" explain this to me? I mean, really.....

Easy, a lot of people say they are Christian but act in a way that suggests otherwise. You seem it on threads on VJ. Someone commits a sex crime or a murder and you find that a lot of posters who describe themselves as Christian demand that the guy be hung up by the testicles or otherwise be punished an 'eye for an eye'.

The simple answer is that in the USA Christianity for a lot of people has less to do with the teachings of the new testament and more to do with the old. That's what drives a lot of the debates on so called social issues. It's why the Republican candidates take such extreme views to curry favour with the electorate.

Why for example is there any debate about gay marriage? It seems like a huge waste of energy.

So yeah, build a wall with machine gun nests, razor wire and land mines and shoot the $hit out of anyone who comes within range of the border. Just don't pretend that it's got anything to do with Jesus' teachings

I love the hypocrisy of the church. Cry over the children from poverty riddled catholic countries who have only been born because of the church's ban on birth control. This pope is a hypocrite, end of story.

I don't think so. I think he's quite open about the problems of the Catholic Church in a way that previous popes haven't been.

As the figurehead of one of the world's richest institutions, the pope should seize the opportunity to lead by example: turn out your pockets, Catholic church, before you start 'casting stones'. Deeds, not words. Surely they could pawn a few thousand golden goblets, a few centuries-old paintings or sculptures, thereby creating even more revenue to build refugee centers (seeing as how he seems concerned enough to proselytize...). Much easier to dole out advice than to act on one's own conscience.

I think they are way past paintings and golden goblets

I knew that the Catholic church is the largest landowner in Manhattan. No small thing. A pious pope would cash in some of these assets and follow his own advice. Right?

That would seem the pious thing to do but it seems that the assets of the catholic church only get cashed in when a judge awards damages inflicted by catholic priests

Then I will pray for you my child. :)

Seriously, you don't have to have been baptized to have interacted with very religious and non- religious types

You know a thread has jumped the shark when a bunch of atheist are defending illegal immigration because, that's what Jesus would do.

That would be like me defending zombies, because a witch doctor said it was cool.

Seriously guys ?

I am not sure if anyone here is an atheist. I am not, maybe others are. In any case, we are discussing what the pope said, which is public record. Having said that, the discussion has nothing to do with religion or any of the gods, so much as with people acting hypocritically, vis-a-vis the mythology they thump on a daily basis. It is a fair discussion.

However, being an atheist doesn't preclude anyone from discussing any particular subject.

It is quite simple really.
