Hello,

My Husband who moved here to Chicago last August ifrom Italy is not eligible for the Obamacare, Medicare, etc because he has not been a permanet resident long enough. We did find an income based medical center here in Chicago after he arrived and we showed my income (since he is not working yet) and he saw the doctor for a comeplete full check up (full blood work, exam), they gave him his allergy medicine and all we paid was $20. I am sure you can find income based medical centers in your area as well. It's for the uninsured. They also help with the paperwork for Medicare or Obamacare if you qualify and they were the ones who told us my husband did not qualify as of yet. The only drawback is that you do need to wait about 2 months for a general appointmeny but they are also affiliated with a wonderful hospital here in case of emergency where we can visit if needed on an emergency basis and that also would be charged for us as income based.

I moved to Chicago last September, and we got covered on the marketplace from day one. Whoever told you that he could not get "Obamacare" is wrong.

Could you elaborate by explaining how you got covered under the affordable health care act as a new immigrant and not yet an LPR?

In Colorado you are eligible to apply as soon as you file to adjust.

Other States should be the same. K1 is a non immigrant visa.

We went on the website, applied and got covered, there is no secret to it. And as only my wife was earning, we got a large part of the monthly fee paid for us. Now I am working for a company that offers health insurance, so we will soon be changing to an insurance policy through my employment.

Oh nice! So my fiancé could apply online and add me at the same time? He's unemployed currently.

According to your time line you are not in the US.

I'm not sure how it works if the USC, is unemployed. For us to qualify for the monthly rebate my wife needed to be earning over $27000 (there are three of us). With most of the monthly fee subsidized, we only have to pay $80 a month for coverage.

I was referring to applying when I am in the U.S. MY arrival is in 34 days, my AOS will be soon after that, and that is when i'd apply.

I believe the issue is medical costs incurred in the US.

From a practical point of view you could probably pop back and the NHS not know you had emigrated.

I'm continuing to pay national insurance so that's not really an issue.

I'm still a British Citizen after all. It's more if I get hit by a car or my appendix bursts etc

I know you said that you want coverage to get you by until you are in country, why not get added to your wife's policy? I know you don't think it's a great policy, but generally speaking, once you are married you are automatically eligible to be on your spouses policy from the date of marriage. It obviously may not cover you overseas as that would be considered "out of market" but it would cover you when you get here until you both can get it sorted to get a better plan. Just my two cents

I'll do that if I can. However I might not be able to get on hers until the start of the fall semester anyway.

NHS is based on residency, nothing to do with NI which anyway is just another tax that goes into the general pot.

Sounds like he should be on Medicaid.
