Hello,

My wife was born in Nigeria in 1981 in the city of Bauchi. We do not have her Birth Certificate. The birth certificate was never issued at the time of birth.

We are in the process of Green Card application in United States of America. But the government officials have denied our application and have requested for a NPC Birth Certificate or Attestation from local government.

We have the declaration of age that we have from Nigerian High Commission. We also submitted affidavits from parents for birth place and time.

Please guide us on how we can work to receive the required documents. Any help in this matter will be appreciated, since if we are unable to get the birth certificate, we will have to leave the country.

Unfortunately we cannot really travel at this point to Nigeria. Is there any way we can get the Birth Certificate via a friend in Nigeria? Also does it have to be from Bauchi. Can we get it from Lagos?

Is it possible to get a certificate of non-availability of birth certificate?

Thank you!

Hi,

My wife's 485 was denied due to lack of birth certificate from Nigeria. She was born in Bauchi, Nigeria.

We had submitted a sworn affidavit [Declaration of Age] from Nigerian embassy along with affidavits from parents and relatives. But we received a response saying that we need to submit the birth certificate within the next 30 days. What should we do now? I feel completely lost and depressed!

How can we get the birth certificate from Nigeria? We do not have any family there anymore and can't travel there either. :(

Please help! What is the process of getting a birth certificate from Nigeria? Does it have to be issued from Bauchi or can we get it issued from Lagos too?

you can get a NPC (Nigerian Population Commission) birth certificate anywhere in Nigeria. Its a federal government recognised birth certificate and thats not difficult to get. where i am presently which is in Lagos, it can be issued in a Local Government

good luck

My understanding is that anyone born before 1992 needs to obtain Attestation of Birth from National Population Commission in Nigeria. I stand to be be corrected if am wrong. I obtained one few weeks ago which will be sent to NVC, if you have any friends or family in Nigeria they can assist you to obtain it. You can get it between 1week to 2weeks depending on how urgent it is.

Thank you so much for the responses!

Can someone born in Bauchi, apply to NPC at Lagos to get her birth certificate?

We do not have family or friends anymore in Nigeria, are there any agency / authority that might be able to help us? We can send the needed documents and fees.

yes you can apply in lagos. it is not a state stuff it is federal, the national population commission is federal and also the local government can issue one for you under a sworn affidavit by your parents. I mean your wife's parents! You will be fine so just call someone back home to help you get it all done and everything will be good.

Hi EOC,

I was born in 1982 in Benin city, Nigeria and have my Hospital birth certificate. I want my birth to be registered with National Population Commission (NPC) and the certificate from NPC to be scanned and mailed over to me. Am in the US now.

Can you please share the contact details of the person (mail id and ph no.) who would be able to do this and the fees involved.

Thanks,

I was born that same year and have a birth certificate, also a lot of my friends do have one too, from the same year. Hmmmm....kinda sketchy or perhaps she's not so sure when she was born considering the fact that many of the northern parts of the country never cared about such factors or birth registration for those fromthose regions were not a norm. So, I hate the fact that you said birth certificate were never issued at that time.

Can anyone please share a contact (email id/ phone no.) of an agency/person who would be able to register my birth at NPC at Benin city Nigeria, to my email address (ganspan14@gmail.com). I do have my Hospital birth certificate from 1982 but want to have one published from NPC, as during my Green card processing that might be asked. If at all there is anyway I can get a document/notice with a Nigerian government seal telling that Hospital birth certificates are valid for all births before 1988, that will also help. Please share your suggestions.
