Hi there,

I'm sorry if this topic has been discussed elsewhere, I'm new to the forum.

I have a job offer as a culturally specific music teacher in the US and think I am eligible to apply for the Q Visa.

My problem is that the job is part-time and will not pay me enough to live initially. I have some money saved up that will get me through the first few months.

Can anyone tell me if I still qualify for the Q visa though the work is part-time?Also, is it legal for me to work elsewhere while in the US with a Q visa? For instance, teaching privately or playing gigs.

I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks ,

Leo

You do not apply for it, something your Employers Lawyers would deal with.

Not a common visa but as far as I can see like similar visa's you are limited to working for your sponsor.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

You can't just apply for the Q visa -- there are only certain programs -- all are cultural exchange programs -- that are accepted by USCIS. The employer then needs to submit a petition (I-129) on your behalf. If USCIS sees that it is does not pay enough to support you, they likely won't approve the petition. IF they do, and you cannot demonstrate to the visa officer than you have enough to supplement the part-time salary without working in elsewhere in the US, they will likely deny the visa. You absolutely cannot work for anyone else other than the employer who petitioned for you.
