1. Good question. Several of the Mods discussed it, in non-knee-jerk fashion. The description for the CE&HST forum is this: "Discussion on the latest news, current events and hot social topics including politics and religion."

The description for the OT forum is this: "Off Topic discussion not relating to US Immigration. For politics or religion please use the below sub forum [meaning CE&HST]."

City/national/international news/events and issues of broad societal importance are CE&HST; personal stuff is OT. Otherwise, think of some trivial or even absurd examples of what could be posted in CE&HST; things would go south in a hurry.

are there any guidelines on what qualifies as 'City/national/international news/events and issues of broad societal importance'? I mean seriously. VJ is a site dedicated to US immigration & life in the US. Shouldn't topics that are irrelevant to most users i.e. uk politics & tv shows be moved to regional forums?

What do you mean things would go south in a hurry, in the forum, if Teddy's thread had been allowed to continue ? Pestilence, diseases, hookers ruing amok in the streets? I personally don't see how one thread, in which the regular members are allowed to talk about current events in their life could bring down a forum! Don't you think that is a bit of an over dramatization to try and back up, another firestorm, created by one particular Mod. Especially since the OP was polite and from the start asked, to please leave it in this forum. Seemed like a simple enough of a request from a very active member of this forum.

I am pretty sure I could go thru this forum and find 10 or 15 more threads very quickly, that are less pertinent to CHEST, than the one Teddy posted.

Seems like the simple enough thing to do, would have been just to move back it back after several members complained. Problem solved. Everyone would have been happy, it would not have impacted the board in anyway, and you would have had a very active thread, which generated a lot of traffic. No more time needed for Mods to have non "knee jerk" meetings.

I was in the management/leadership game a long time. It's obvious what is going on. However at some point punishing the troops, by refusing to correct a questionable decision by a junior leader, under the guise of solidarity of leadership will back fire on you.

As Teddy said, we all get along better than we ever have, with the exception of one or two trolls, we are like family here. As I commented to Teddy, how can you insult a man after you have discussed double deep fat fryers with him. LOL. I think the friendship and mutual respect in the forum has blossomed, because the mods backed off a bit and allowed us to iron out our own differences.

In closing, You may have moved the thread yourself. I believe that. However I also believe that if Teddy had asked you in a polite way to move it back you would have, and made some funny comment and moved on. That is why you are generally respected among our members and others not so much.

That CEHST forum is nothing but a place for folks to go and blow off some steam. What difference does it make if we do it over politics or over a beer and some deep fried twinkies? Just let it run itself until someone steps out of line, then the mods can come in and do what they're supposed to do.

Regulars who aren't always nice to each take part, and are jovial (mostly) and interact in a way they don't regularly do. For a few short hours it's like a unicorn shone a rainbow out of its horn and we all ate ice cream to the dulcet tones of Marvin Gaye.

Then someone decides to show us he has testes, and institutes a scorched earth policy. Thread moved; protests ensue; supercilious back-up arrives that does nothing to explain what happens, but merely shows that some think their excrement don't stink. (Hint: it does.) More discussion by aggrieved parties, followed by yet more supercilious, condescending and out-of-touch justifications.

We are the users. We want the thread somewhere that we can encourage participation, goodwill and maybe even more insight into each other. All this mod grandstanding comes off as the farts of people who seem to think modding is the ne plus ultra of the internets, as petty tyranny that is being exercised upon us for... what? Not always being nice? Surely, as others have pointed out, it's in the interest of VJ as a whole to encourage the prickliest amongst us to get along better. It's also in the interest of VJ to have mods whose actions are rational, not just capable of rationalisation. Pretty words don't make dumb choices correct.
