CEHST Gets Personal

I'm supposed to go camping with my wife this weekend. Camping. In a tent. With my wife.

...and it's raining.

I hadn't run for a long, long time and recently got back into it. The issue I have is every time I round a bend or see the end of a street or whatever I just want to stop. How do you guys get over that? And what do you think about while running? I reach that "normal breathing" stage fairly quickly and I don't hurt or anything after so I know it's not physical. How do you stay motivated?

I don't run, but I do have a Nice elliptical I try to use about 4-5 times per week, to try and stay less fat. To me, the trick is no matter how bad you don't want to, just get on it and don't push yourself at first. After about 7 mins it gets to feeling good and I pick up the pace. I watch a good series like Rome or Game of thrones on the Tablet until I am bored , then switch to the Guns and Roses channel on Pandora, which gets me really pumping.

One other way is I blank out the time and display on the machine. In the good Ol' Ft Benning days, the use to run us on some hell puke run. The we would round the corner and they would turn the formation into the assembly area. After one brutal run, the did a lap around the assembly area and headed us back out. everyone thought the run was over, then there we went again, and some fell out. Our Platoon leader, called that a Mind F! he said your mind was ready to quit so you let your body quit also.

I learned a long time ago the body will go waaaaaaaay farther than we think it will - provided our mind will let it happen. But as a fat civilian puke I can't help but think of cheeseburgers and stuff when I'm out there running. I even ruck up sometimes and head out for long ruck marches (with PT belt, of course!) and the whole time all I'm thinking about is getting to Chipotle when I'm done.

FAT!

I usually play a different game with myself. Sometimes I get sweaty and out of breath but it's a lot more fun than running.

In all seriousness, thanks for the tip. That's usually what I'll do. I set a goal of 2 miles or "to that stop sign" and on some days I'll blow right by it and others I'll stop short. Seems like the main thing is just getting out there and going for a run regardless of the distance.

It's all psychological. Unless you collapse with a heart attack you can do a 10k, half marathon or whatever.

Willpower. You just don't stop. Its a game you play with yourself. You can think yourself out of a run when you can do the distance and more.

A good trick is to compromise on your goal and say to yourself "i'll stop at that shop", but when you reach that point you set a new goal. And when you reach that goal you set another one etc. You know when you are physically tired Vs. when you just can't be bothered.

It's not easy, but it's the way forward.

That's what I did when I started. Now I just know how far I'm going to run. I only take a short cut if I'm running a quick pace and wanna go for speed. But yeah, this is solid advice. What do people think about when running? Math, lots of math. Math about how you're doing and how much longer it's gonna be.

If you go to bed hungry, you've won for the day. It's weird but eventually it's how you measure stuff.

That's normal. Some days are just better than others. Be sure not to let the bad get you down. Duncan is right, unless you fall over, you're still within your capability.
