Hi!

I'm currently studying in America and my boyfriend's family is sponsoring me to study here. I have full intention of returning back to my home country with him (where I met him in 2012 but I received a student visa in 2014) but I would like to marry him and switch to permanent resident, so I can have dual citizenship, just in case things in my home country don't go well, we can go back to America. My question is, since I already knew him in 2012, and got my student visa in 2014, will immigration officers think it is fraudulent? That I came to America after knowing him just to marry? He studied abroad in my country and I returned back to America with him, and we love each other very much and always had intentions of getting married.

I ask this because I have read that it's acceptable if the f1 visa holder met the american citizen whilst studying abroad; I, on the other hand, met him a couple of years back and then decided to go to America.

You won't have dual citizenship, or at least not yet. It's an important distinction, so be fully aware that becoming an LPR is not the same thing as becoming a US citizen.

Provided you are a bona fide student and have been attending school, I doubt this will be a problem.

He studied abroad in my country and I returned back to America with him, and we love each other very much and always had intentions of getting married.

the IO would care about 2 things during the interview:

1. did you have the intent to marry him before or after you got your student visa?

2. why are you marrying him? because you're at a good stage in the relationship or because of the immigration benefits?

if you're applying for the AOS very quickly after getting the student visa, it will look like you intended to marry him before you got your F1, because a marriage doesn't just happen overnight. and as other people in this forum have pointed out, you will need to stay married to this same guy to go from PR to citizen.
