Drivers Licence from Canada to US with Fiance Visa

So my fiancé is Canadian and has a Class 1 drivers license. What are the rules and does he need to take a drivers test again to drive in the US? he is moving here.

Driver's licenses are by state, you'll need to look into the regulations for your state.

In Georgia I had to take the written and driving test over again as they did not recognize any foreign licenses; however, some states do

As canadian_wife stated above, it varies by state. For South Dakota, all I needed to take was the vision test as they recognized my Quebec driver's licence.

Are you asking if he can transfer from a Class 1 to a CDL? Someone else was just asking about that on here. There are both state and federal regulations for CDLs, and I think the federal regulations include having an annual medical exam. Some states will transfer a Class 1 to a CDL, often they only do it for Canadians and no other nationalities. But as others have said, each state has it's own rules. You may have to call the DMV of the state in question if you cannot find information about transferring a Class 1 to a CDL.

Also keep in mind that he may not be able to drive commercially until he has his EAD, there will likely be a similar restriction on getting the CDL.

it depends on the state. In Texas, you need proof of being in the country lawfully also.

California is one of the more difficult (aka we're special) states. Likely everything will have to be redone.

You can apply as soon as you are in their computer system, typically takes less than 2 weeks from your POE. We went to update it with the green card and they didn't even have in their records that she had a green card...so they can be slow.

I have to redo all the tests too and I live in Utah, it is the same as Cali I believe. Any out of country drivers here have to redo the written & road test sucks. I had my written test today and next have to make an appointment for a road test! I didn't bother getting it immediately after I had my EAD (you have to have your EAD here to get it, not sure what the rules are in Cali). But because of insurance reasons I have to get it now. Blahhhh.
