K-1 Visa Interview Alone. What Should we expect? Tips?

My fiance and I are finding that even though we're still waiting for the NOA2, this process is EXPENSIVE!!! Right now I am moving back to the states to go to school next week (I was here in Canada on a student visa but money issues screwed my schooling up) and after looking at the budget I won't be able to afford to come back and accompany my S.O. to the visa interview whenever it might be.

Right now im about 5mins from a full blown panic attack. I have no idea what to prepare him for or prepare myself for and I want to make sure that he doesnt accidentally screw things up. I know he's probably able to handle himself better than I think he can at times but giving up ever ounce of control is scaring the crappie out of me!!

So help guys, what have been your experience with you or your loved one interviewing alone? What should we expect? Any tips?

If I were you I would ask this in your regional discussion for Canada.

Only they will know exactly what it is like for that embassy.

Anyway, do not panic it is literally nothing to panic about. The interviews Are conversations. View it as a relative just asking questions that you should as a couple know about your relationship in general.

Panicig will just make your partner panic and that won't do either of you any favours.

If you are genuine then you have nothing to fear.

Canada is low fraud country for US visas. Most of times I read that beneficiary from Canada went alone to the interview and got approved. Usually petitioner encourage to attend the beneficiary's interview when the country fall into high fraud.

I went to my CR-1 interview in Montreal alone, and though I was pretty nervous right up to the night before, I actually found myself feeling pretty calm once the day of the interview actually came. Just make sure he's prepared with all of the appropriate documents and evidence just to be safe, read the embassy reviews, and don't worry. It'll be fine. :)

Went to my CR-1 interview alone.......The Interview is the easiest part of the whole process......There is actually only a few minutes of "work" while ur at the consulate....majority of time one is just waiting. Its really anti-climatic,lol

To help put urself at ease.....once u have the interview date....make a new post here on VJ and list down the items (paperwork, evidence) that u will be taking to the interview, and others can look at it and see if u are missing anything.

As well get one of those plastic accordion file folders, that have multiple slots, and put ur paperwork and evidence in that. As one can't bring in any big bags and electronics. As well it comes in handy in keeping future evidence/paperwork organized!

Best of luck,

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I did my K-1 interview on my own too, and the other people there with me were also on their own for the majority. I was really scared, had barely slept the night before, but really, like everyone is saying, it's really not that stressful.
The part where they check if you have all your documents was actually scarier than the actual interview.
tips?

- make sure you have all your documents.

- don't lie

- relax :) (easier said than done ;) )

I did mine solo. They don't expect or require the petitioner to be there. Deep breath, he'll be fine. Make sure he's got everything organized (accordion folder is a good idea, I used a binder...though they didn't look at all the stuff it's better to have too much than too little IMO!)

The interviews in Vancouver and Montreal are pretty easy, especially for multi-generational Canadians. Either way it's his interview so relax the control freak in you, he will likely be just fine! :) You guys certainly picked a more expensive route so start saving up for the AOS.

Petitioner's are not expected or required at either consulate.

Good idea on the file folder thing, but what do you mean by "work" at the embassy, could you elaborate on that?

:) You guys certainly picked a more expensive route so start saving up for the AOS.

Oh man I know, but we thought this way would be faster (boy were we wrong) and we also thought that because we're so young they might be suspicious of us if we just had a little shotgun wedding here in Canada considering the only family we communicate with is in Washington :/ but hey whats done is done, and atleast we started the process!

If you think its expensive now - read ahead to what you'll be forking out for Aos (Adjustment of status) righnt after your wedding.

my goodness I know already , still trying to see where to scrape that money from, sad that I'm probably going to have to wait a few years to have the wedding of my dreams because of how expensive this whole process is, and the wedding I wanted wasn't even that expensive only 3k! but at least after this I (hopefully) wont ever have to leave his side again!

Just chiming in as I had my K1 interview not too long ago in Vancouver. I was approved on the spot.

It really is a piece of cake. They asked me very standard questions about our relationship. They didn't ask "trick" questions or anything remotely to that. If you couldn't answer some of these questions (How many siblings does your SO have? Have you met his family? What does he/she do for a living), then it would be very obvious that you don't know your partner.

My #1 tip for anyone who has asked me about the process or the interview is BE ORGANIZED. It will help immensely. When you get into your interview, the security will ask you for your interview confirmation. Then you will be taken to the appropriate rooms. Someone will come and ask for documents, while you wait for the actual agent to do an interview. Having all the documents in hand and well organized will help you through this process. There is a check-list in the forums and in the guides about what to bring.

Make sure you do your medical before your interview. Leave a day or two in between so that you can get the sealed report from the panel physician in time for your interview.

If you have a clean record and haven't done drugs, etc. It's very easy. There may be some hiccups if your fiance has previous mental health issues or has substance abuse. This may require more time and testing.

The process is very expensive. You pay for your petition, your medical, your interview etc. Once you do your POE, you will also have AOS which is $1070.

Good luck!
