And I know plenty of folks who are out of work who don't go around shooting people.

Now am I a leftie? I like to think of myself as a compassionate libertarian conservative. I am all for helping those that can't help themselves or even those than can help themselves, but they have to help themselves in order for me to help them also.

But, how do we know that they can help themselves? I can't judge if I don't know someone's situation. To say that those trapped in poor communities are a product of their own choices without other influences is wrong.

Because if you are in otherwise good health, you should never get something just handed to you. You should have to pick up trash, cut grass, go to classes, help the elderly. Something besides sitting on your front porch all day.

Seriously though, if the problem with the unemployed is that they sit on he porch smoking all day, then most unemployed do not fit the profile. Incidentally a lot of people who get assistance from government work at least one job. Should these people be asked to work yet another job to get this assistance? I am not quite sure what you are advocating really.
