Was hoping to get some input on Iphones for family in Vietnam.

Walmart has the IPhone 4s for $300 new and was considering buying a couple for family. Just wanted to get some input or advice, as I am an old dude and don't have any idea.

The carrier is Straight Talk.

Not sure if they can be unlocked and used back home in VN.

Thanks - hope someone can help me out.

from what I've read http://www.loopinsight.com/2013/01/09/walmart-straight-talk-wireless-to-offer-iphone-4-and-5/ the iPhones that straight talk offers are CDMA which means that they won't work outside the U.S. even if they could be unlocked.

What you can do, if you know someone who is an AT&T customer who has fulfilled their contract obligation, you can buy an AT&T locked iPhone off a site like Glyde (say $225-$285) and get your friend to request AT&T to unlock it. Find a tech-savy friend to do this.

There are also web sites that will unlock iPhones for you. They claim to be legal....I dunno about that, but I know people who have used them with success (something like $25 to unlock I think)

stright talk uses two technologies, they use GSM and/or CDMA. if you want to use the iphone in vn, u need to buy the gsm iphone. then you can have it unlock from online or somewhere else.

buy an iphone 5 for $400, it's better than iphone 4s.

The pricing for iphones in Vietnam is pretty much comparable to US pricing; my nephew just asked the other day for pricing of iphone 5S in US, after I told him the prices for the no-contract ones, he says its the same prices in Vietnam. He works at a local cell phone store. They still prefer iphones from US since it is "legit".

because the sources of the iphones in Vietnam are suspect since there is not an official APPLE store in Vietnam that I am aware of...many knock-off stores for sure, reselling new ones brought in from outside and used ones.

CHECK before you buy .... Iphone model numbers does matter ---

and of course, the iphones need to be unlocked - either here or in Vietnam.

iPhone GSM Model Numbers
  • iPhone 5: A1429 (* World GSM & CDMA)
  • iPhone 5: A1428
  • iPhone 4S: A1387 (* dual band CDMA & GSM world phone)
  • iPhone 4S: A1531 (GSM China)
  • iPhone 4: A1332
  • iPhone 3GS: A1325 (GSM China)
  • iPhone 3GS: A1303
  • iPhone 3G: A1324 (GSM China)
  • iPhone 3G: A1241
  • iPhone 1: A1203
iPhone CDMA Model Numbers
  • iPhone 5: A1429 (* World GSM & CDMA)
  • iPhone 4S: A1387 (* dual band CDMA & GSM world phone)
  • iPhone 4: A1349

Not to rock the boat, but there are official Apple deers in VN. Both in Hanoi and

And HCM. However, unless you buy from them you are getting a counterfeit iPhone.

I might add, don't expect to get the great customer service from an official store here that you do in the USA. We here are handled out of Singapore and they suck.

I don't think there is an official Apple store in Vietnam, like in the states. Only authorized or premium dealers (like FPT, Future World, iCenter, Mac Center, etc.) that sell Apple products. The premium dealers' showrooms (FTP, Future World, iCenter) are laid out exactly like the official Apple stores in the states or other countries, down to the displays, tables, locations of the merchandise.

Front gear,

I hate to disappoint you, but there are indeed official stores in Vietnam. If you doubt what I say just speak to Apple USA. I use these stores all the time. Even get the Apple survey when I have. Have talked on the phone with Apple USA about a problem I had with one of the HCM stores as well. They had it resolved in minutes.

I've just spoken to Apple Sales and they confirmed that they do not have any Apple Retail Stores in Vietnam. None. Zero. Nada. Zip.

The stores that you have used are probably their Premium Dealers. Apple provides full sales and technical support for these Premium Dealers. Keep in mind that Premium Dealers are totally different from Authorized Dealers.

Call Apple Sales USA if you have doubt.

Please, it is rather irresponsible to suggest you speak factually by making such an assertion without provided the source info e.g. The phone number to which you gained this false information. I had no idea this conversation would lead to this. If anyone is interested in if finding the truth PM me and I wi give you the Apple link so you can find the authorized Apple dealers in both Hanoi and HCMC. I think to much has already been said about computers on a site dedicated to US immigrations. Sorry to see you spread false information by adding credence to it by suggesting you phone Apple USA, shame on you.

Well, I called 1-800-MY-APPLE, spoke to a computer voice, said "customer service", the voice asked me to tell it more before it could transfer me to an agent, I said, "Store Location", it asked me for my zip code or speak the address, I said, "customer service" and got transferred to an agent named Brad. We were on the phone for approx 6 minutes and he told me that they do not operate any RETAIL store in Vietnam, either in Ha Noi or HCMC, or anywhere else in Vietnam for that matter. He said if I have any tech support questions or pre-sale questions, call 001-803-65-7955 or chat online with a customer service rep. I remember he said these support/sales calls are being handled by either Apple Thailand or Apple Indonesia.

Hope that is enough proof for you. LMAO.

How about giving us the address or approximate location of the said Apple RETAIL store (or stores) in HCMC or Ha Noi, if you have ever set foot in one.

I am surprised a man with your intelligence (or not) cannot tell the difference between an official Apple Retail Store and an AUTHORIZED DEALER. The question that had been asked was the Apple retail store, not an authorized dealer.

This is not a pissing match over an Apple retail store location so this is my last response to this thread. If you folks do not believe me, do yourself a favor, pick up the phone, and call Apple USA 1-800-MY-APPLE. Don't believe everything you read unless it's on the Internet.

Good luck with your petition, vagabond.
