I am wondering what the percentage of people who are filing for AOS after k-1 visa did so with the assitance of an immigration lawyer. Myt wife and I went it alone. The forms were simple enough, we had all our ducks in a row. We never recieved any RFE notices and we had our AOS interview about three months after we filed. At that time we were told our case was approved pending the FBI Name Check.

It seems like there are a ton of people here in the same boat as us and I am curious if having the lawyer would have made it faster. My wife's friend who is also a nurse from Hong Kong married a U.S. Citizen who is in the Navy a year and a half ago. She came here on a K-3, got married and got her EAD and GC all in less than a year. There was no delay with name check or any of the B.S. that a lot of us are going through. It seems that a laywer may be able to help you make sure all the paperwork is in order before sending it off, but can they really make the name check go any faster?

Having a lawyer definitely does not make the name check go any faster. That is something the USCIS decides, depending on how common your name is, among other things.

Sept. 9/08... SSA office to change status to "U.S. citizen"

Oct. 8/08... Applied in person for U.S. Passport

Oct. 22/08... U.S. Passport received

DONE!!! DONE!!! DONE!!! DONE!!!

Apr. 6/05... DS-230, Part I faxed to Vancouver Consulate

May 26/05... K-2 Interview - APPROVED!!!!

Sept. 5/05... Entered U.S.

Sept. 7/05... I-485 & I-131 sent to CLB

Feb. 22/06... AOS Interview - APPROVED!!!!! (Passport NOT stamped)

Dec. 4/07... I-751 sent to NSC

May 23/08... 10-Yr. PR Card arrives in the mail

Mar. 22/11.... N-400 sent to AZ

June 27/11..... Interview - PASSED!!!

July 12/11..... Oath Ceremony
