Fruitland Park police Chief Terry Isaacs said his department has been shaken by troubling but unproven allegations that a deputy chief and a former police corporal were associated with the Ku Klux Klan.

The allegations, contained in a confidential FBI report provided to Isaacs by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, led to the sudden resignation of Deputy Chief David Borst and Isaacs' decision Friday to dismiss Officer George Hunnewell.

Isaacs would not confirm that the report linked the two officers to the KKK, instead describing the group as a "subversive organization." He said he couldn't be more exact in his description because he thought he was not authorized to release details of the report. Issacs said the document was given to him as chief to consider how the allegations might affect the officers' credibility and the perception of the department in the community.

Chief Deputy State Attorney Ric Ridgway, from whom Isaacs sought advice, identified the KKK as the hate group.

"It's not a crime to be a member of the KKK, even if you are the deputy chief. It's not a crime to be stupid," Ridgway said, in a previous interview. "It's not a crime to hate people. It may be despicable, it may be immoral, but it's not a crime."

So that's what happened. I was wondering why my response took a dive.

I'll wager about 4 people can come in here and discuss this without incident, if not, there will be no participation.

Could you please explain how the two posts you removed were "off topic". One post clearly quoted the article in the op and the second post was in response to that. Thanks.

Well, clearly if you are affiliated with an organisation like the KKK you probably shouldn't work in a position such as law enforcement where your bias is likely to call your professional ethics into question.

agreed.

Which is sad that people think you can have those type of views and somehow separate that from a duty that brings you into contact with people you've sworn to hate and provide them with protection.

Does that include Religious organizations that hold some of the same beliefs about others or worse ?

It is said that these people get past the selection process and through the academy, to begin with. It is even sadder that their peers protect them and keep them sheltered, all the while compromising public safety. On a positive note, every once and again one gets exposed and we remind ourselves that justice is sometimes served.

The selection process for the police (at least over here) is fairly rigourous - you're even supposed to provide pictures of any tattoos that you might have that could be considered culturally insensitive.
