Can't you just find a Canadian person and stay in Canada? Are there ulterior motives to your wanting to come to the USA? What "really upsets" you? Why can't your new US Citizen move to Canada? To me this topic smells fishy. Are you female? Are you both male? So many things going on here...

WOW - I'm not sure the OP came on here to receive such judgment.

I guess one could ask the same as you, why didn't you just find an American? Why did you go to Vietnam to find your fiancé? The answer - we can't help who we love.

If you do not have anything constructive, please stop pestering people coming for advice. Canada/US relationships are common due to the easy travel requirements and the geographical proximity - some couples are no more than an hour apart.

Good luck

Can't help but laugh at this one...

Yes, the OP clearly is doing something fishy by marrying an American, getting a divorce, immediately leaving the country and going home instead of trying to stay at all costs, and then meeting another American years later and marrying again. Such a thing could never possibly happen in a non-fraudulent situation, especially with someone living in a country so far away from the US where no Americans ever go.

[/sarcasm]

Some people...

Really? On a VISA website? You're going to ask someone why they can't just find a person in their own country or have someone move to their country instead of the United States?

I know you got a raw deal, but dude. Your situation is not every situation, and it's not like most Canadians desperately want to come to America for a better life. It's generally kinda the opposite.

Love is funny, so are visa issues. Just asking questions. Something is fishy though with this one.

Please don't throw jabs at my unfortunate situation please. That is plain mean. My intentions were completely good and genuine.

I'm sure an attorney can fix this Canadian's dilemma easily enough and he/she can come to the USA and live happily in love a second time around.

Dear Canadian, please get an immigration attorney.

edit to delete obnoxious sarcastic comment about how someone on a visa site (going through the process TWICE!) could ask why she didn't just find someone in her own country.

Hi again everyone.

In response to averysadguy, there's nothing fishy about the situation but you are definitely entitled to your opinion.

In my original post I mentioned how my boyfriend and I are just in the beginning stages of deciding where we want to live. Call it a part of our 5-year plan if you like. We both have established homes, full time jobs in our respective towns and both love where we live, but it was a reality from the beginning that if this relationship was to continue a big move was going to be a part of that future.

I love both of our Countries, we're so very much alike. My SO and I decided that we are going to weigh both the pros and cons of living in each area and decide what's best for us, not just for one or the other. Since our salaries are nearly equal, it isn't as simple as just moving to whoever makes the most money. There's a lot of factors that will affect our decision and it's not one we will make quickly.

My original question regarding my GC/status was to help figure out where I stood in the immigration process in the US, just another factor to weigh in when deciding which side of the border will work for us. We are interested in getting a decision made and the immigration process started so that when the wedding day comes in ~2 years we will have already gotten the ball rolling to wherever we decide to go.

An immigration lawyer will be used, for sure. I believe it's worth the extra costs to ensure that everything is filed correctly and that all that legal jargon is understood. I'm a "sign here, here and here." kinda person.

Thank you all for your input! I feel much better.

Good call. It's also worth emphasizing that the discussions people have about where to start a life together are very different depending on what countries are involved.

Good luck - sounds like you both have your heads on tight, and while it might be a process, it won't be a bad one. :-)

No one can come from any country to marry an American without a petition. If you come on a business or tourist visa and fall in love great, but guess what you have to go home! Coming to the USA is a privilege, not a right.

And to set the record straight I am a US born, US citizen who pays a heckuva a lot of taxes to pay for a whole lotta stuff, but I don't support giving access to US benefits to scammers.

In response to the original question "will this hinder me in the future?" is precisely hire an immigration attorney. But VJ is great for advice, if we get the all the facts truthfully.

Excuse me ? Who are you ? If you are almost as self righteous as you sound like, why don't you have the chutzpah to go to the south border and catch illegals ?!

Paying tax isn't a big deal , guess what , most people pay taxes ! Paying tax doesn't give you the privilege to be rude.

Thank you both for your quick responses. I tend to worry a lot, even over things that may not even come to be. I need to stay away from Google searches and patiently await a meeting with a lawyer to discuss what's available to us in the future.

It's sad that my 1st marriage ended in divorce, but we loved each other enough to know we didn't want to continue living together being miserable and eventually come to hate each other. We are both much better people now, apart, as friends. I am happy that it ended civilly and I was able to learn and grow from it.

Thanks again :)

Most questions have been asked and resolved in the past and Google is the fastest, easiest, cheapest way to find your answer. All you have to do is just type your inquiry the right way... Good luck!

Actually I'm going tonight :)

I'll let you know how my global access card works upon return.

No illegal catching and no advance parole problem for me. I just won't bring back more than 1 L of tequila. CBP won't let me, even if I pay tax.

People who pay more taxes tend to get a little miffed when the gov't sorta blows the dough.

Thanks hypnos, I didn't know I had a "shtick"
