Miami, the great world city, is drowning while the powers that be look away

The Egyptians did not build condos on the flood plains. They used the land for agriculture. Very different use.

Hahahahah! Well, those of us with some modicum of education have heard about the city of, say, Alexandria and the historical problems of flooding there, being built on a floodplain and all. lol. Why do you embarrass yourself like this? Probably the best known event in that regard was the tsunami that inundated the city after an earthquake on Crete in 365 AD. It destroyed the city. The capital city.

You also don't know a thing about Egyptian management of floodplains, which included extensive irrigation infrastructure, and the fact you have to live where you farm. But you can count on the armchair environmentalist to have a superficial put-down to anyone who knows more than he does about the subject he is pretending to profess. It's all about perception management, not knowledge of the subject matter.

They lived adjacent to the waterways and did the best they could to build on the higher ground available along rivers but by DEFINITION you are in the lowlands whenever you locate by water bodies like this.

See how you practiced selective attention by ignoring both the Netherlands as well as the very common problem of ports on floodplains too? Because you are all about manipulating perceptions. So therefore pretend nobody mentioned the Netherlands or ports, and most especially the common sense approach of costs vs. benefits. There are tremendous human benefits from locating on rivers and coastlines as transportation corridors, commercial centers, agricultural centers, etc. - but the armchair environmentalist will deny all of this in order to screech about flooding - as if nobody else knew about it.

Anything, ANYTHING except demonstrate you are capable of learning. That's what is so bizarre: posing yourself as someone who knows more, but being the very last person who is even remotely interested in learning something. I suppose it is a self-selection problem: you have to be that kind of person in the first place in order to fall for these chicken-little proclamations about Miami "drowning" and have no inkling about why people locate near water bodies in the first place. Yes, the capital city gets completely destroyed on occasion but the alternative is STUPID: leaving your civilization in abject poverty by locating where an armchair environmentalist tells you to.

I don't think anyone disputes that floodplains can be (and are) managed successfully, but I don't think you can argue that large changes in the sea level won't at some point necessitate change in urban development planning. It's inevitable.

We are fortunate to live in affluent nations, where we have the money and resources to construct major flood defences. However, contrast that with poorer low-lying countries like Bangladesh (a country you missed off of your list), which floods for 6 months out of the year. Major floods there have killed hundreds of thousands of people and destroyed entire crop harvests. Sea level rises there, mean more seasonal flooding, more cyclones and storm surges. What's the solution there? How much will it cost to fix it?

So sure, your Florida home isn't going anywhere soon, but when the money runs out even you are going to have to face reality.

Higher sea levels equal greater coastal erosion. You can't reclaim land that's been washed away.

Oh, but you can. Pretty much ALL of Florida south of Orlando used to be under water. Now, it's reclaimed and being used. One day, it will probably be under water again. Life cycle. But THAT life far exceeds humans...

How is it possible all of Florida use to be under water.

Is it possible that sea levels have always fluctuated greatly, even prior to mans arrival on earth.

??????? Say WHAT??????

Can't be. The current rise is due to man causing global warming due to excess carbon output. Prior to man being invented, ocean levels never fluctuated.

(But let's make it even more clear... global warming is WOMENS fault, the carbon excess in the atmosphere comes from all that carbon dioxide. )

lol. This was you, just ONE PAGE AGO:

Quite simply, it's short-sighted to continue building on flood plains.

So now you deny saying it!

This demonstrates the futility in dealing with the cocktail-party environmentalist. You can't have a coherent discussion. The key behavior is just like above: keep throwing out "problems" you haven't spent even a few seconds looking into because this is supposed to show how much you care.

I entered "engineering solutions to Bangladesh flooding" and got two million hits with google. You won't even spend that much time looking into solutions because the point is perception management, not actually caring at all about how to solve these problems. You wouldn't even be ASKING me if you actually cared. You would be listing the various PhD theses, government reports, etc. that ANSWER those very questions.

So there is a question for YOU to answer: why is it, that being the person who claims to want answers for what Bangladesh should do about its flooding doesn't even care enough to type a sentence into google to see what the answers are?
