Getting ready to apply for Naturalization

Good morning all,

My wife is getting ready to submit her application for Naturalization, but we confused by the language of some of the questions in the document checklist on the USCIS website.

First, when they ask for copies of our childrens birth certificates, it states:

Documents referring to you and your spouse:

a.

Tax returns, bank accounts, leases, mortgages, OR birth certificates of children;

Are they looking for PHOTO COPIES of these or do they want the ACTUAL birth certificates?

Also, as far as the tax returns, this section DOES NOT indicate the # of tax returns they are looking for or the fact that they even want tax returns? Are birth certificates sufficent or should I include tax returns, and if so, how many years back? Like I said, it doesn't indicate how far back in this sections, but if you go to the next two sections, it says this:

b.

Internal Revenue Service (IRS)-certified copies of the income tax forms that you both filed for the past 3 years;

or

c.

An IRS tax return transcript for the last 3 years

My main concern with this is that I DO NOT HAVE a tax return from 3 years ago because my wife and I amended our return for that year and never requested an amended copy of it. I don't want to send the application in incomplete and slow down the process. I have no problem contacting the IRS tomorrow for a transcript, but I'd rather push forward now without waiting longer.

If anyone can help clear up some of these ambiguities for me, it would be great.

The instructions I read stated that you send in a photocopy of the required attached documents unless they request otherwise ... So, I send a photocopy of birth certificates and marriage document.

They asked for the last 3 years of the IRS tax info ... Here is where you can get them for free ... just copy from your printer and include with your completed N-400:

I only sent the tax return transcripts for the past 3 years. If you read the instructions, it says that you need to provide ONE of those sets of documents. I'll definitely bring everything that I have for the interview. And yes, copies are ok. I sent the original tax return transcripts but made copies of them, just in case.,

You can get the tax return transcripts online or over the phone (I had trouble getting it online), and in this case they will mail it to you.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I got on the IRS website this afternoon and was able to print out my tax return transcripts from the past three years!
