Police Record vs Criminal Record

Hi guys,

We are in the process of our K1 application (moving from Ottawa, ON to Houston, TX) and I had a question about the police record check. I'm sort of confused if I need a Police record check or a criminal record check. Does it have anything to do with finger prints? I'm hearing two different things, one is that I can go to my local police station in Ottawa and get it done through this form > http://www.ottawapolice.ca/fr/contact-us/resources/PoliceRecordCheck_e,pdf.pdf

and the other thing I'm hearing is I need to get it done following this http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cr-cj/fing-empr2-eng.htm

I'm sort of freaking out coz it says Criminal record check takes about 6-8 weeks! How long would it take to get police record done in Ottawa? I can't find it anywhere on their website all I saw was about background checks. Please help, would truly appreciate it. (Don't have any records of any kind that I'm aware of, except I was charged with "careless" driving when I was a teenager and I have been told it's not in my record anymore. I'm 24 now) Thanks so much guys.

If you have no criminal record or convictions just the standard police check is fine - getting mine took about half hour here in Saskatoon and was 30$. Just ensure that it says the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or the national criminal records repository was searched using the name provided. If you do have a record, you need to get the full check with fingerprints and what not.
