Hello,

My fiancée and I are to married in a month and will be filing our AOS next. How soon is he able to apply for health insurance here in the US? Do we have to wait until our AOS is approved? Until he has his green card? Now?

Completely clueless on this topic, so any advice is welcome!

Thanks!

Applicants for AOS are allowed to apply, so as soon as you get your NOA1. They used our wedding date as the 'life event' so make sure you get it done in 60 days.

I had to fill out the paper application, since the online one can't handle this type of status. (I'm in CA - MN might be different). After a few weeks, we got a call about the application, and the representative started our online application, and told us to upload the supporting documentation. Right now we have conditional approval, until they review our documents. I've read that AOS applicants get denied because it's a small set of people applying, so the workers don't all know what to do about it. After denial you can appeal, and someone higher up will approve it.

Will you be adding him to your arrangements?

My husband (USC) just called up his insurance and had me added to his after we married. All they needed was my name, date of birth etc and my social security number. No forms, no visa/AOS issues, just a quick phonecall.

That being said, every insurance company will be different. If you intend to add him to your insurance, I would suggest calling them up after you get married and try to add him, if there's anything else you need to do then at least you'll know for sure.
