email from USCIS?

I have seen some people mentioned that they received some email from USCIS/NVC. how do they get your email? what point do they ask to provide you w/ an email address. So far I have only filed I130/G325A forms. any comments? thanks

07/31/2011 -- US Citizen wife applied for her parents I-130

12/12/2011 -- Got NOA1 ONLY for mom's file

12/22/2006 -- got married in india

01/17/2007 -- I-130 packet sent to NSC

01/27/2007 -- moved to CSC

01/29/2007 -- NOA1 received

04/19/2007 -- NOA2 received

K3 -- I129F

2/12/2007 -- packet sent

2/22/2007 -- NOA 1

4/25/2007 -- notice received in mail

5/10/2007 -- NVC recieved case (finally, after 3 weeks)

5/14/2007 -- NVC sent case to Mumbai embassy

5/21/2007 -- Embassy received case

5/31/2007 -- wife sent in packet 3

6/15/2007 -- wife received packet 4

8/23/2007 -- INTERVIEW DATE wohooooo + got K3 visa on 23rd :)

9/03/2007 -- sweetheart is here in US

AOS - EAD

9/17/2007 -- AOS/EAD package sent to chicago lock box

9/26/2007 -- NOA 1s for 485 & EAD

10/1/2007 -- biometrics appt letter received

10/13/2007 -- fingerprinting....speed it up guys..

11/28/2007 -- card production ordered - EAD

03/04/2008 -- final interview for greeen card :)

go to the USCIS website and sign up to receive notifications by email

September 12th, 2006 - Sent in I29F to California Service Center

September 23rd, 2006 - NOA1 Received

December 6th, 2006 - NOA2 Online - APPROVED

January 31st @ 7:30 AM - Interview APPROVED

June 7th, 2007 - Sent in AOS, EAD, and AP Applications

June 15th, 2007 - NOA1 for AOS, EAD and AP

July 14th, 2007 - Biometrics Apointment

August 17th, 2007 - EAD and AP APPROVED

September 18th, 2007 @ 9:03AM - AOS Interview APPROVED

July 29th, 2009 - Sent in I-751 -Lifting of Conditions

July 31st, 2009 NOA

August 29, 2009 @ 12:00P - Biometrics Appointment

Go to the USCIS website at https://egov.immigration.gov/cris/jsps/index.jsp and sign up to track your case status. You'll have to create an account for yourself and provide an e-mail address. You can only do this if you have your NOA1 with an assigned case #. If you don't have this just yet, wait until you do.

Also, anytime they update information on the website about your case that is known in VJ terms as a "touch".. sometimes you'll get many touches before it's approved, sometimes (like in my case) you don't get any before it's approved.

When it is approved, and provided you've set up an account on the USCIS website, they'll send you an e-mail notification that your case has been approved, before you get the offical letter through the post.

01/26/07 - DS230 finally received 11 days after it was generated.. can anyone say snail mail..

03/03/07 - Case received at Mumbai Embassy

05/22/07 - Medical Interview Breach Candy Mumbai

05/24/07 - Interview date at Mumbai consulate - APPROVED!

06/02/07 - Mumbai - Paris - Atlanta - Charlotte. Departs June 1st 4.45am EST Arrives June 2nd 4.12pm EST

07/10/07 - Received Conditional Greencard. Still waiting on the SSN
