Should I make my first visit to see fiancee since she returned home after J1 visa and accompany her to K1 visa interview in HCMC?

Hi all,

My fiancee and I met when she came to the U.S. under a J1 visa. We lived together for the one year and one month she was in the U.S. After she finished her internship program, we had a couple of weeks to travel in the U.S. before she returned home in August 2013.

In December 2013, I filed a K1 visa petition and we just received NOA2 at the end of June 2014. Now we are waiting for NVC to transfer our case to the Consulate in Vietnam and then get ready for the interview.

So my question is…

Is it necessary for me to go to Vietnam to visit her and her family and/or go with her to the interview in HCMC? Does it hurt our case if I don’t visit? Could it be a red flag for the official?

I've never been to Vietnam or anywhere that far away before. The longest distance I have travelled was from New York to Switzerland and Italy. I don’t really like flying to begin with and I'm a big tall guy, so it's not comfortable being on a plane, especially for the 20+ hours it will take to get to Vietnam. I also don't have many vacation days left for the rest of this year, so it would be nice if I don't have to go but can wait for her to arrive back in the U.S. and we can be together again. So then, in the immortal words of the Clash, should I stay or should I go?

To answer your main question is it necessary.... nope it wont raise a red flag with the consulate

and if you were to go I would wait until she had visa in hand and go get her and fly back with her.

Besides it would help set your inlaws-to-be minds at ease that you care enough to meet them assuming you havent yet done so.

The consulate did ask of me on a 221g she was given at her interview, as to why I had only visited her once. It had to be signed and notarized. We are in AP as of now.

My advice? Go. I can't speak for HCMC, but I went with my fiancee at her interview in Manila. It definitely helped the process plus it really helped my fiancee with her nervousness. The CO asked me 90% of the questions and even commented that it was good that I was there with her.

The interview process is stressful and having your support will help your fiancee. 20+ hours in a plane is worth it, if you ask me
